Question

Can I use isododecane gel to replace isododecane liquid, hydrogenated castor oil and Cera bellina?

Product Type: Foundation balm/cream

Current Formulation:

  • Isododecane: 38%
  • Hydrogenated castor oil: 7%
  • Cera bellina: 7%

Issue:
I'm finding it sets too quick to pour cleanly but gives a good texture on the skin.

Answer

Replacing your current combination of Isododecane liquid, Hydrogenated Castor Oil, and Cera Bellina with an Isododecane Gel is possible, but it will significantly change the physical structure and "set" behavior of your foundation balm.

1. Texture and Structural Changes

  • Current Formula (Wax-Based): The 14% wax content (7% Hydrogenated Castor Oil + 7% Cera Bellina) creates a "True Balm" structure. Hydrogenated Castor Oil provides hardness, while Cera Bellina provides creaminess and prevents graininess. The "quick set" you are experiencing is due to the high melting point of the Hydrogenated Castor Oil (~86°C); it crystallizes almost instantly as the temperature drops during pouring.
  • Proposed Change (Gel-Based): Replacing these with a gel will shift the texture from a solid balm to a viscous, thixotropic gel-cream. It will not have the same "hard" snap as a wax-based balm but will offer a very smooth, cushiony application.

2. Solving the Pouring Issue

The main advantage of using a gel like Isododecane Gel (Thixotropic) or Hectorite Gel™ is their thixotropic nature.

  • They are thick at rest but become fluid when stirred or sheared.
  • This allows for a much cleaner and easier pour at lower temperatures compared to high-melting-point waxes.

3. Recommended Options for Foundations

  • Hectorite Gel™ (Isododecane Base): This is highly recommended for foundation formulas. It uses Disteardimonium Hectorite to suspend pigments perfectly, preventing them from settling over time. It provides a professional, matte-leaning finish.
  • Isododecane Gel (Thixotropic): This creates a clear, bouncy gel that provides a smooth, silicone-like film on the skin and a slightly more dewy/satin finish.

4. Suggested Hybrid Approach

If you want to keep the "Balm" feel but fix the pouring issue, you don't necessarily have to replace everything. Try this adjustment:

  • Reduce Hydrogenated Castor Oil to 2-3% (to lower the setting temperature).
  • Replace the remaining wax and some liquid Isododecane with 10-20% Hectorite Gel™.
  • This maintains the "body" of a balm while the gel improves the flow and pigment suspension.
