Review and Feedback on Various Ingredient Trials and Formulations
Question
I would like to share my experiences using various ingredients and formulations, both successful and unsuccessful, and ask for feedback and alternative suggestions.
Successful Experiences:
- Lip Peeling: Using
Glycerin100% initially (followed by edible oil and Vaseline) significantly improved lip condition. - Itchy Scalp:
Dandruff-Guard (Piroctone Olamine)1% in homemade shampoo effectively eliminated itching. - Dry, Scaly, Rough Skin: A formula with
Squalane2%,MOIST722%,WaterLock1%, andPro Polymer0.5% improved skin texture over time. - Oily Face: A mattifying gel formula from the recipe section reduced oiliness with consistent use (approx. 2 months).
Unsuccessful / Problematic Experiences:
- Clogged Acne:
Encapsulated Salicylic Acid (BHA)did not effectively treat clogged acne and seemed to cause inflammation. - Capryloyl Salicylic Acid (LHA): Using
Capryloyl Salicylic Acid (LHA)10% mixed with water resulted in crystallization and felt ineffective for acne. - Slim-Burn™: Applying
Slim-Burn™even at 0.1% on body skin caused significant redness, burning, and itching.
Could you please provide feedback on why the BHA/LHA and Slim-Burn™ experiences might have been negative, especially regarding potential salicylate sensitivity? I am also seeking alternative suggestions, particularly for a toner for skin sensitive to salicylates, perhaps using Natural PHA (Gluconolactone) with Witch Hazel as suggested by another user (C7). Additionally, what could be the reason for the severe reaction to Slim-Burn™ and are there alternatives or ways to mitigate this?

Review Summary and Feedback on Ingredient Usage
Thank you for sharing your detailed review and experiences with various ingredients! Your insights are very valuable for other members.
Here's a summary of your experiences and the feedback provided:
Successful Treatments:
- Lip Peeling: You found success using Glycerin 100% initially (though direct application is generally not recommended by staff for long-term use as it can cause dryness), followed by edible oil and Vaseline. This approach helped improve your lip condition significantly.
- Itchy Scalp: Using Dandruff-Guard (Piroctone Olamine) 1% in your homemade shampoo effectively reduced and eliminated scalp itching. The staff was pleased to hear about this positive result.
- Dry, Scaly, Rough Skin: Your formula containing Squalane 2%, MOIST72 2%, WaterLock 1%, and Pro Polymer 0.5% showed significant improvement in skin texture over time, resulting in smoother skin.
- Oily Face: Using a mattifying gel formula from the recipe section helped reduce oiliness, although it required consistent use for about two months to see noticeable results. The staff confirmed that treating oily skin often requires time and consistency, depending on the severity.
Less Successful / Problematic Experiences:
- Clogged Acne: You felt that Encapsulated Salicylic Acid (BHA) did not effectively treat your clogged acne and might have contributed to inflammation. The staff explained that BHA can initially cause existing or starting inflammation to worsen due to its irritating nature. They emphasized the importance of sufficient skin hydration and nourishment when using BHA to control inflammation and allow the BHA to dissolve clogs. If the skin becomes severely irritated, dry, or peeling, it can absorb BHA too quickly, leading to negative results like redness, dryness, peeling, and persistent acne.
- Capryloyl Salicylic Acid (LHA): You observed crystallization when mixing Capryloyl Salicylic Acid (LHA) 10% with water and felt it was ineffective for acne. Another user (C7) explained that LHA, like other salicylic acids, needs suspending agents (like cream makers or Pro Polymer) or solvents (like propylene glycol) to stay dispersed in formulas, especially clear toners, to prevent crystallization. They also noted that BHA and Encapsulated Salicylic Acid may not work for everyone, and skin sensitivity to salicylates could cause clogged acne to become inflamed acne. They suggested Natural PHA (Gluconolactone) mixed with Witch Hazel as a gentler alternative for salicylate-sensitive skin in a toner format.
- Slim-Burn™: You experienced significant redness, burning, and irritation on your body skin even at a low concentration (0.1%) of Slim-Burn™. You found relief using a formula containing Vitamin B12 5%, Urea 2%, Sodium PCA 4%, Sodium Lactate 2%, Squalane 0.5%, and Pro Polymer 0.5%.
