Answer

Formulation Review

Shampoo Formulation

The proposed shampoo formulation appears feasible.

  • Sulfate Free Shampoo Base (pH 7, Clear, Foaming) at 30% is within the recommended usage range (25-35% for adult formulas).
  • Poly-Conditioner Eco at 3% is within its recommended usage range for shampoo (1-3%).
  • Biotin Express at 0.9% is within the typical usage range for the liquid form of Biotin Express (1-2% of the 10% solution).
  • Essential Oil at 0.5% is a standard concentration for fragrance in shampoo.
  • Mild Preserved Eco™ (Preservative-Free) at 1% is within the recommended range (1.0-1.5%) for general cosmetic formulas. Remember to add this ingredient in the final step of your formulation process.
  • Water makes up the remainder, which is standard.

The combination of these ingredients at these percentages should result in a functional shampoo.

Conditioner Formulation

The proposed conditioner formulation is mostly feasible, with one significant point to consider.

  • Cetyl Alcohol at 5% is within the recommended usage range (0.5-6%) and will contribute to thickening and conditioning.
  • Behentrimonium Chloride (BTAC) at 2% and Cetrimonium Chloride (CTAC) at 1% are within their recommended usage ranges (0.5-10% for BTAC, 0.5-2.0% for CTAC) and are commonly used together in conditioners for smoothing and anti-static properties.
  • 1,3-Propanediol at 5% is within the recommended usage range (1-20%) and acts as a humectant and solvent.
  • Olive Oil (Extra Virgin) at 10% and NaturalProfile™ Sweet Almond Oil (Cold-Pressed) at 5% are within their recommended usage ranges (1-100%) and will provide moisturizing and conditioning benefits. These should be incorporated into the oil phase.
  • Mild Preserved Eco™ (Preservative-Free) at 1% is within the recommended range (0.5-2.0%). Add this in the final step.
  • Water makes up the remainder, which is standard.

Important Consideration:

  • Sandal Pentanol at 5%: Sandal Pentanol is typically classified as an aroma chemical used for fragrance. Using an aroma chemical at a concentration of 5% is unusually high for a conditioner and could potentially cause skin or scalp irritation, or result in an overpowering scent. Aroma chemicals are generally used at much lower percentages, often below 1%, when used solely for fragrance. You should verify the intended purpose and safe usage rate of this specific Sandal Pentanol product. If it is purely for fragrance, it is strongly recommended to significantly reduce the percentage.

Assuming the Sandal Pentanol percentage is adjusted to a safe and appropriate level (if intended as a fragrance), the rest of the conditioner formulation components and their percentages are suitable for creating a conditioner.

In summary, the shampoo formula looks good. The conditioner formula is also generally fine, but the high percentage of Sandal Pentanol needs careful review and likely reduction.
