Question

I have revised my cream formula for acne treatment and skin nourishing (intended as a night cream for normal to dry skin) with the following ingredients:

  • Salicylic Acid EZ (10%)
  • Vitamin B3 (Niacinamide) (3%)
  • Alpha Arbutin (2%)
  • WaterLock (Polyquaternium-51) (2%)
  • Repair Activator (Bifida Ferment Lysate) (10%)
  • Shea Butter Light Oil (5%)
  • Grape Seed Oil (5%)
  • Satin Cream Maker (2%)

Could you please confirm the compatibility of this formula? I am also considering adding Titanium Dioxide Pigment (3%). Is this possible, and how should it be incorporated? Are there any concerns regarding the high concentration of Salicylic Acid EZ (10%) for normal to dry skin?

Answer

Thank you for providing your revised formula and the feedback from the staff. Your updated formula using Satin Cream Maker is compatible, as confirmed by the staff, and addresses your goal of creating an anti-acne and nourishing night cream for normal to dry skin.

The ingredients you've chosen offer several benefits:

  • Salicylic Acid EZ (10%): This is a key ingredient for treating acne by exfoliating and clearing pores.
  • Vitamin B3 (Niacinamide) (3%): Known for its anti-inflammatory properties, it can help reduce redness associated with acne, improve skin barrier function, and offer anti-aging benefits.
  • Alpha Arbutin (2%): Included for its skin brightening properties, which can help with post-acne marks.
  • WaterLock (Polyquaternium-51) (2%): Provides hydration and improves skin feel.
  • Repair Activator (Bifida Ferment Lysate) (10%): Supports skin barrier repair and has anti-aging effects, which can be beneficial, especially when using exfoliating ingredients.
  • Shea Butter Light Oil (5%) and Grape Seed Oil (5%): These emollients are suitable for normal to dry skin, providing nourishment and helping to counteract potential dryness from the Salicylic Acid. Shea Butter Light Oil also aligns with your desire to include Shea Butter's properties.
  • Satin Cream Maker (2%): This emulsifier is easier to work with, as you noted, and helps create the desired cream texture.

Regarding the Salicylic Acid EZ at 10%, please be aware that this is a very high concentration for a leave-on facial product. While effective for exfoliation and acne treatment, it significantly increases the risk of skin irritation, dryness, redness, and peeling, particularly for normal to dry skin which may be less tolerant than oily skin. We strongly recommend considering a lower concentration, such as 0.5% to 2%, which is more commonly used in leave-on products and is generally better tolerated. If you choose to proceed with 10%, please perform a patch test on a small area of skin first and observe for any adverse reactions before applying it to your entire face.

You previously mentioned including Titanium Dioxide for instant whitening. It is not included in this revised formula, and the staff correctly noted that its adherence might be limited in this type of formulation.

Overall, the revised formula is compatible and contains good ingredients for your stated goals, but the high concentration of Salicylic Acid requires careful consideration due to the potential for irritation.

Please let us know if you would like assistance adjusting the Salicylic Acid concentration or have any other questions.
