Question
I have a revised serum formula and would like to confirm the mixing instructions and how to adjust the viscosity for a pump bottle. The formula is as follows:
- Repair Activator™ (Bifida Ferment Lysate) - 10%
- GlucoBright™ (Acetyl glucosamine) - 4%
- Safe-B3™ (Vitamin B3, Niacinamide) - 5%
- Activated Resorcinol S™ - 5%
- Tranexamic Acid (Trans-White™) - 3%
- Centella Asiatica Extract (Madecassoside 7.7%) - 2%
- Zinc PCA - 1%
- Licorice Extract - 1%
- AcneBee™ Extra - 2%
- Rice Vitamin (Inositol) - 2%
- Satin Cream Maker - 2%
- Silicone Gel (Ultra Clear) - 10%
- Mild Preserved Eco - 1%
- Distilled Water - Remaining %
My questions are:
- Is mixing this formula manually sufficient, or is blending required?
- How can I adjust the viscosity to ensure it is suitable for dispensing from a pump bottle?
Answer
Revised Serum Formula and Mixing Instructions
Based on your revised formula and the staff's feedback, here is the information:
Your revised formula can be mixed, although the staff noted that due to the number of ingredients, it might feel a bit heavy on the skin.
Revised Formula:
- Repair Activator™ (Bifida Ferment Lysate) - 10%
- GlucoBright™ (Acetyl glucosamine) - 4%
- Safe-B3™ (Vitamin B3, Niacinamide) - 5%
- Activated Resorcinol S™ - 5%
- Tranexamic Acid (Trans-White™) - 3%
- Centella Asiatica Extract (Madecassoside 7.7%) - 2%
- Zinc PCA - 1%
- Licorice Extract - 1%
- AcneBee™ Extra - 2%
- Rice Vitamin (Inositol) - 2%
- Satin Cream Maker - 2%
- Silicone Gel (Ultra Clear) - 10%
- Mild Preserved Eco - 1%
- Distilled Water - Remaining %
Mixing Instructions:
- Combine ingredients 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 10, and 14 (Distilled Water) together as the water phase. Mix well until clear.
- Add ingredient 11 (Satin Cream Maker) at 2%. Blend or stir until a smooth gel texture is achieved.
- Add ingredient 7 (Zinc PCA) at 1%. Blend or stir to combine. The texture might become slightly thinner. (The staff noted you can add more Satin Cream Maker here if it becomes too thin).
- Gradually add all the remaining ingredients (6, 9, 12, and 13) and stir until everything is well combined.
Regarding your questions:
- Is manual mixing sufficient? The staff's instruction mentions "blend or stir", implying that while stirring is possible, blending might be more effective, especially for incorporating the thickener (Satin Cream Maker) smoothly and avoiding lumps.
- Viscosity for pump bottle: To control the viscosity and ensure it's not too thick for a pump bottle, you will need to adjust the percentage of Satin Cream Maker (ingredient 11). The staff recommended starting the Satin Cream Maker at 1.5% initially (though your formula lists 2%) and increasing it if the mixture is too liquid, or decreasing it if it's too thick. You will need to experiment to find the desired consistency.
The staff also advised against using Argan Oil and Shea Butter for oily skin.
