Revised Toner Formula for Dry Skin, Enlarged Pores, Brightening, and Occasional Acne

Question

I am looking to create a toner for dry skin, enlarged pores, brightening, and occasional acne. I plan to use Aloe Vera Extract and Willow Bark Extract.

Could you confirm the percentage calculation, for example, if 2% Aloe Vera Extract means 20g in a 1000g batch (given the extraction ratio is 10:1)?

Also, if I use Witch Hazel as the base instead of water, will it improve the toner's effectiveness, especially for pore tightening?

Separately, can Q10 be mixed with Rose Hip Oil?

Answer

Revised Toner Formula for Dry Skin, Enlarged Pores, Brightening, and Occasional Acne

Based on your original formula idea and the feedback received, here is a revised toner formula designed to address your skin concerns:

Proposed Formula (Total 100g)

  • Witch hazel (Distillate - Alcohol Free, Paraben Free): 70g (Used as the primary base for pore tightening)
  • Green tea extract (Hi-EGCG™): 5g
  • Willow bark extract (Natural Salicylic Acid): 5g (Helps with exfoliation and pore clearing)
  • Calendula Extract (Water Soluble): 5g (Provides soothing and anti-inflammatory benefits)
  • Vit B3 (Safe-B3™ - Vitamin B3, Niacinamide): 4g (For brightening, barrier support, and oil control)
  • Aloe Vera Extract (extraction ratio 10:1 FullAssay™): 2g (For soothing and hydration)
  • GlucoBright™ (Acetyl Glucosamine): 3g (Works with Vit B3 for brightening and hydration)
  • Beta Glucan 70% (Oat Extract, Water-Soluble): 2g (Added for intense hydration and soothing dry skin)
  • Water: 4g (To reach a total of 100g)

Explanation of the Formula

This formula uses Witch hazel as the main liquid base, as suggested, to enhance its pore-tightening effects. Green tea extract and Calendula Extract provide antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and soothing benefits, which are great for calming the skin and helping with occasional acne.

Willow bark extract contains natural salicylic acid, which helps to gently exfoliate the skin and clear out pores, addressing the enlarged pore concern. Your inclusion of Vit B3 (Niacinamide) is excellent for brightening, improving the skin barrier (beneficial for dry skin), and helping to regulate oil production.

We've added GlucoBright™ (Acetyl Glucosamine), which works synergistically with Niacinamide to boost brightening effects and improve skin tone. For your dry skin, Beta Glucan 70% has been included. Beta-glucan is known for its strong hydrating properties, ability to soothe irritation, and support the skin's natural barrier function, which is crucial for dry skin types.

Hydrolyzed wheat protein quat was removed as it is primarily used for hair conditioning and not typically recommended for skin toners. If you wish to include a protein for skin, a non-quat version like Hydrolyzed Soy Protein would be more suitable, but it was omitted here to simplify the formula and focus on your primary goals.

This revised formula aims to provide a balanced approach to tighten pores, brighten the complexion, soothe the skin, and provide much-needed hydration for your dry skin type.

Remember to perform a patch test before applying the full product to your face.
