Riceberry Gel Formulation: Gelling Agents and Preservation

Question

I am making a riceberry gel and have some questions about the formulation:

  • Can I store the gel in the refrigerator without using preservatives?
  • Can I use other gelling agents instead of Carbopol, such as Carbomer or Sugar Gel?
  • What type of preservative should I use? I heard parabens are banned by the FDA.

Answer

Regarding making riceberry gel:

  1. Storage without preservatives: Storing the gel in the refrigerator can help slow down microbial growth to some extent. However, for water-based formulations, especially those containing natural extracts like riceberry, using a suitable preservative is generally necessary to ensure product safety and prevent spoilage from bacteria, yeast, and mold over its intended shelf life, even when refrigerated. Refrigeration alone is not a substitute for a proper preservative system.
  2. Alternatives to Carbopol: Yes, you can use other gelling agents. Carbomer is a very common alternative to Carbopol (as Carbopol is a brand name for a type of Carbomer). Carbomers are effective gelling agents for cosmetic formulations. Sugar Gel (which can refer to different ingredients, often polysaccharide gums like Sclerotium Gum or Xanthan Gum) is another type of gelling agent that could potentially be used, but it might yield a different texture or require different usage levels compared to Carbomer. As advised by cosmeceutical7, using Carbomer is a suitable option.
  3. Preservatives: As mentioned in the reply you received, it's important to use appropriate preservatives and avoid parabens, as they are currently restricted or banned by the FDA (อ.Y.). There are many other effective cosmetic preservatives available.

In summary, while refrigeration helps, a preservative is recommended for safety and shelf life. Carbomer is a good alternative to Carbopol, and other gelling agents like Sugar Gel might also be possible depending on the desired result. Always choose preservatives that comply with current regulations.
