Question

I would like to ask about the safety of Geranium oil and Tea Tree Oil. If I want to mix 1% of each into a cream for facial application:

  • Are these oils dangerous to inhale?
  • Will they cause skin irritation on the face?
  • Are these two oils considered Natural Organic substances from nature, or are they chemicals?

I am looking for safe, natural ingredients to use.

Answer

Safety of Geranium Oil and Tea Tree Oil in Face Cream

Regarding your questions about Geranium oil and Tea Tree oil for use in a face cream at 1% concentration:

  • Inhalation Safety: Essential oils contain volatile compounds. While generally safe when used at low concentrations in topical products like creams, inhaling concentrated essential oils can potentially cause respiratory irritation in some individuals. At 1% in a cream applied to the face, the risk of harmful inhalation effects is generally low for most people, but individual sensitivity varies.

  • Skin Irritation: Both Geranium oil and Tea Tree oil can cause skin irritation, especially at higher concentrations or in individuals with sensitive skin. For Tea Tree oil, a usage rate of up to 2% is often suggested for facial products, so 1% is within a commonly used range. However, even at 1%, irritation can occur. It is highly recommended to perform a patch test on a small area of skin before applying the cream to the entire face.

  • Natural Origin: Both Geranium oil and Tea Tree oil are essential oils derived from plants. Geranium oil comes from the Pelargonium graveolens plant, and Tea Tree oil comes from the Melaleuca alternifolia tree. They are considered natural extracts. While they originate from nature, they are complex mixtures of chemical compounds. The term "Natural Organic" specifically refers to how the plants were grown and processed according to organic standards, which is not a property inherent to the oil itself unless certified. Essential oils are natural, but they are still chemicals and can cause biological reactions.

  • Safety at 1% for Face: Using Geranium oil and Tea Tree oil at a 1% concentration in a face cream is generally considered a low concentration. However, due to the potential for skin irritation and individual sensitivity, it is crucial to perform a patch test before widespread use. If you experience any redness, itching, or discomfort, discontinue use.

If you are seeking safe, natural ingredients, essential oils like Geranium and Tea Tree are natural extracts, but their safety depends on concentration, purity, and individual skin type. Always prioritize patch testing and observe your skin's reaction.

We have products like Tea Tree Oil (Water Soluble) and Acne-TT™ (Standardized Tea Tree Extract For Acne) which are related to Tea Tree oil and used in skincare formulations.
