Question

I made a face cream and intended to add 1% Phenoxyethanol as a preservative. However, I accidentally added 3-4%. Is it safe to use this cream on my face or any other part of my body?

Answer

Phenoxyethanol Concentration in Face Cream

Regarding your concern about the face cream formulation containing 3-4% Phenoxyethanol when the target was 1%, the advice you received is correct. It is strongly recommended to discard the product and not use it on your skin, especially on the face.

Phenoxyethanol is a common and effective preservative used in cosmetics. However, like many ingredients, it has recommended usage rates to ensure safety and minimize the risk of adverse reactions. The typical recommended usage rate for Phenoxyethanol in cosmetic products is between 0.5% and 1.0%. For products used around the eyes, the recommended rate is even lower, not exceeding 0.5%.

Using Phenoxyethanol at concentrations as high as 3-4% significantly exceeds the generally accepted safe limits for cosmetic applications, particularly for leave-on products like face creams. At these higher concentrations, Phenoxyethanol can cause skin irritation, redness, itching, or other adverse reactions. The face is particularly sensitive, making the risk of irritation even higher.

Therefore, even though it is regrettable to discard the batch, using a face cream with such an elevated level of Phenoxyethanol is not advisable due to the potential for skin harm.
