Salicylic Acid Gel Cloudiness Issue
Question
My gel formulation containing Salicylic Acid, Glycolic Acid, Allantoin, Oleanolic Acid, and Piroctone Olamine became cloudy after adding Salicylic Acid dissolved in heated Propylene Glycol. How can I fix this or what ingredients should I use to make a clear Salicylic Acid gel?
Answer
Salicylic Acid Gel Formulation Issue
The cloudiness in your gel formulation after adding the Salicylic Acid dissolved in Propylene Glycol is likely due to the type of Salicylic Acid used. Ordinary Salicylic Acid is not water-soluble, and while it dissolves in Propylene Glycol with heat, it will precipitate and cause cloudiness when mixed into a water-based gel base like the one you created with Cellulose and Xanthan.
To achieve a clear gel with Salicylic Acid, you should use a water-soluble form of Salicylic Acid. We offer a few options that are suitable for this purpose:
- SalicSoft® (Betaine Salicylate): This is a water-soluble form of Salicylic Acid that is gentler on the skin. It requires adjusting the pH of the formula to 3.8-4.2 with an ingredient like triethanolamine for complete solubility.
- ActiveRelease™ Salicylic Acid (Powder, Water-Soluble): This is another water-soluble Salicylic Acid powder that can be dissolved directly in the water phase and offers a timed-release effect.
Using either SalicSoft® or ActiveRelease™ instead of ordinary Salicylic Acid will help you create a clear gel formulation.
Regarding the other ingredients in your formula:
- Allantoin: Allantoin has limited solubility in water (0.5% at 25°C). Using 1% might exceed its solubility limit at room temperature, potentially contributing to some haze. Consider reducing the concentration or using Natural Betaine to help increase its solubility.
- Oleanolic Acid: Oleanolic Acid is not water-soluble and typically needs to be dissolved in a solvent like laurocapram before being incorporated into the oil phase of a formula (if applicable) or dispersed in a gel. Ensure it is properly dispersed or solubilized to avoid contributing to cloudiness.
- Piroctone Olamine: Piroctone Olamine is dispersible in water and soluble in detergents or Ethanol. Ensure it is well dispersed in your gel base.
By switching to a water-soluble Salicylic Acid and ensuring proper incorporation of Allantoin, Oleanolic Acid, and Piroctone Olamine based on their solubility, you should be able to achieve a clear gel.
