Question

I have a cosmetic product that has developed scales or something similar, as shown in the image. The product has not expired and has been stored properly at a cool room temperature, away from sunlight. I would like to know if it is still usable or if there is something wrong with it.

Answer

Product Appearance Change: Scales in Cosmetic Product

Based on the image and your description, the appearance of scales or crystals in your cosmetic product, even before the expiration date and with proper storage, can be due to several factors:

  • Crystallization: Some ingredients, such as certain waxes, fatty alcohols, or preservatives, can crystallize under specific temperature fluctuations, even within the recommended storage range. This is more common in emulsions or products with high concentrations of these ingredients.
  • Ingredient Compatibility: Sometimes, ingredients within a complex formulation may not remain perfectly stable together over time, leading to separation or the formation of precipitates or scales.
  • Temperature Fluctuations: While you stored it at cool room temperature, significant or repeated temperature changes (e.g., during transport or if the room temperature fluctuates) can sometimes affect product stability.

Is it still usable?

It's difficult to say definitively without knowing the exact product formulation. However, you should check for other signs of spoilage:

  • Smell: Does the product have an unusual or unpleasant smell?
  • Texture: Has the overall texture changed significantly (e.g., become lumpy, watery, or separated beyond the scales)?
  • Color: Has the color changed?
  • Mold or Bacteria Growth: Are there any visible signs of mold or unusual growth?

If the scales are the only change and there are no other signs of spoilage (smell, major texture/color change, mold), the product might still be usable, but its efficacy or texture might be affected. However, if there are any other signs of degradation, or if you are unsure, it is best to err on the side of caution and discontinue use to avoid potential skin irritation or adverse reactions.

It is always recommended to follow the manufacturer's specific storage instructions for optimal product stability.
