Sebderm Cream Formulation: Questions on Concentration, Solubility, and Tea Tree Oil
Question
I have a question regarding the following cream formulation for Seborrheic Dermatitis (Sebderm):
Cream Formula:
- Tea Tree Oil: 0.5%
- Zinc Pyrithione: 0.25%
- Dandruff-Guard: 0.1%
- ethanol: 1%
- water: 96.35%
- Phenoxyethanol: 0.8%
- Luxury Cream Maker: 1%
My questions are:
- Are the concentrations of Zinc Pyrithione (0.25%) and Dandruff-Guard (0.1%) appropriate for a leave-on product?
- Will Dandruff-Guard 0.1% dissolve completely in this formula with only 1% ethanol?
- Is Tea Tree Oil which is an Essential Oil (EO) the same as Tea Tree Oil which is Oil-soluble?
- I bought Tea Tree Oil from another source and it came in a glass bottle with a plastic stopper. The stopper has not dissolved. Does this test confirm that the Tea Tree Oil I bought is not genuine?
Answer
Hello,
Regarding your questions:
Concentration of Zinc Pyrithione and Dandruff-Guard: The concentration of Zinc Pyrithione at 0.25% and Dandruff-Guard at 0.1% in this cream formula is appropriate for a leave-on product, as previously advised by the staff.
Solubility of Dandruff-Guard in the Cream Formula: Dandruff-Guard™ is soluble in ethanol. Your formula contains 1% ethanol, which may be sufficient to help dissolve 0ruff-Guard. However, to ensure complete dissolution of Dandruff-Guard, the staff previously recommended considering increasing the ethanol content to 2%. Using ethanol at 1-2% is a very low level and does not cause skin irritation.
Tea Tree Oil (EO vs Oil-soluble) and Plastic Dissolution:
- Tea Tree Oil which is an Essential Oil (EO) and Tea Tree Oil which is Oil-soluble are the same type.
- Regarding the test using Tea Tree Oil to dissolve a plastic stopper, this cannot definitively confirm whether your Tea Tree Oil is genuine or not. This is because Tea Tree Oil can only dissolve certain types of plastic. The fact that your plastic stopper does not dissolve does not necessarily mean your Tea Tree Oil is fake; the type of plastic must also be considered.
In summary, the adjusted formula you have provided has appropriate concentrations of the active ingredients. However, it is recommended to consider increasing the ethanol to 2% to ensure more complete dissolution of Dandruff-Guard.
Thank you.
