Separation and Sedimentation in Aloe Vera Gel with Actives

Asked by: pokbenjawan On: October 05, 2015 Product Type: Cosmetics

Question

I mixed Aloe Vera Gel (Lite) base with Vitamin B3, Soy Extract, and Adenosine Complex. After sitting, the mixture separated and developed sediment.

  • What is the cause of this separation and sedimentation?
  • Can it be fixed by blending or shaking before use?
  • Would using Aloe Vera Gel (Heavy) base prevent this?
  • Is Adenosine Complex the likely cause of the sedimentation?
  • Would adding Pro Polymer™ Silk help stabilize the mixture and suspend the sediment?

Answer

Hello,

Thank you for providing the details of your issue. It sounds like the mixture of Aloe Vera Gel (Lite) base with Vitamin B3, Soy Extract, and Adenosine Complex has become liquid and has sediment after sitting.

To help you diagnose the cause of the separation and sedimentation and suggest the best solution, the staff needs more specific information about your formulation:

  • Exact list of all ingredients used: Please confirm all ingredients added to the Aloe Vera Gel (Lite) base.
  • Percentage or amount of each ingredient: Please provide the concentration (e.g., percentage) or the exact amount (e.g., grams, ml) of each ingredient you added.
  • Detailed mixing steps: Please describe exactly how you mixed the ingredients, including the order of addition, the temperature, and the mixing method (e.g., hand stirring, using a mixer, how long you mixed).

Regarding your questions:

  • Blending: Blending might temporarily re-disperse the sediment, but it may not solve the underlying stability issue that caused the separation in the first place.
  • Shaking before use: Shaking can also temporarily mix the ingredients, but it's not ideal for a stable product and doesn't address the cause of the separation. The effectiveness might be reduced if the actives are not evenly distributed.
  • Using Aloe Vera Gel (Heavy): A heavier base might offer better stability for certain ingredients, but whether it would prevent sedimentation in your specific mixture depends on the ingredients and their concentrations.
  • Adenosine Complex causing sedimentation: It is possible that one or more of the added ingredients, including Adenosine Complex, might not be fully soluble or compatible with the base or other ingredients at the concentration used, leading to sedimentation.
  • Adding Pro Polymer™ Silk: Adding a thickener like Pro Polymer™ Silk could potentially help stabilize the mixture and suspend the sediment by increasing the viscosity. However, compatibility with all ingredients needs to be considered.

Once you provide the requested details about your formulation (ingredients, amounts, and mixing steps), the staff can better analyze the situation and provide a more precise recommendation on how to fix the current batch (if possible) and how to formulate it correctly in the future.

We look forward to receiving your details.

Thank you.
