Serum Formulation for Oily, Acne-Prone, Sensitive Skin
Question
I have oily, acne-prone, and sensitive skin. Based on the previous suggestions for using a BHA toner (possibly with Tea Tree Oil) for clogged pores, and ingredients for oil control, whitening, and skin strengthening, could you provide a specific serum formulation (around 50ml) that avoids heavy oils and large amounts of moisturizers? I'm looking for a lightweight, water-based serum that helps dissolve clogged pores, controls oil, brightens, and strengthens my skin, suitable for sensitive skin.
Answer
Suggested 50ml Serum Formula for Oily, Acne-Prone, Sensitive Skin
This formula is designed to be a lightweight, water-based serum.
Ingredients:
- Distilled or Deionized Water: 43.75 ml (approximately 43.75 g)
- Safe-B3™ (Vitamin B3, Niacinamide): 2.5 g (5%)
- Tranexamic Acid (Trans-White™): 1.5 g (3%)
- ActiveRelease™ Salicylic Acid: 1.25 g (2.5%)
- ActiveRelease™ Centella Asiatica: 0.5 g (1%)
- Mild Preserved™ COS: 0.5 g (1%)
Total: Approximately 50 g / 50 ml
Ingredient Benefits:
- Safe-B3™ (Niacinamide): Helps reduce oiliness, minimize pores, fade dark spots and redness, strengthen the skin barrier, and has anti-inflammatory properties, making it excellent for acne-prone and sensitive skin.
- Tranexamic Acid (Trans-White™): Specifically targets dark spots and hyperpigmentation, helping to even out skin tone.
- ActiveRelease™ Salicylic Acid: A gentle, water-soluble form of BHA that helps exfoliate inside pores, dissolving clogged pores and treating acne. The timed-release makes it less irritating.
- ActiveRelease™ Centella Asiatica: Provides strong anti-inflammatory and anti-irritant benefits, soothes the skin, and supports wound healing, which is great for sensitive and acne-inflamed skin.
- Mild Preserved™ COS: A broad-spectrum, water-soluble preservative suitable for sensitive skin and effective in the required pH range.
How to Make (50ml):
- Weigh the Distilled or Deionized Water into a clean beaker or container.
- Add Safe-B3™ (Niacinamide), Tranexamic Acid, and ActiveRelease™ Salicylic Acid powders to the water. Stir gently until fully dissolved. You can gently warm the water (up to 40-45°C) to help the powders dissolve faster, but avoid prolonged heating.
- Add ActiveRelease™ Centella Asiatica liquid and stir to combine.
- Add Mild Preserved™ COS and stir until evenly mixed.
- Check the pH of the mixture. For optimal effectiveness and gentleness, the pH should ideally be between 4.0 and 6.0. If needed, you can adjust the pH using a very small amount of a mild acid solution (like Lactic Acid) or a mild base solution (like Triethanolamine).
- Once the pH is adjusted and the mixture is uniform, transfer the serum into a clean bottle, preferably with a dropper or pump.
Usage:
Apply a few drops to clean, dry skin after cleansing, morning and night. Follow with a lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturizer if needed (though with oily skin, you might find this serum is enough hydration). Always use sunscreen during the day.
Important Notes:
- Start with a patch test on a small area of skin to check for any reaction, especially since you have sensitive skin.
- This formula is water-based and should feel light and absorb quickly. Avoid adding oils or heavy moisturizers to keep the texture light.
- Store the serum in a cool, dark place.
