Serum Formulation Review: Vitamin C Issues and New Anti-Aging/Whitening Formula
Question
I previously tried a Vitamin C serum that had mixing issues (possibly related to Hyaluronic Acid solubility) and caused a skin reaction (redness, dryness, flaking), suggesting an allergy.
I am now developing a new serum formulation for anti-aging and whitening. My proposed formula includes the following ingredients:
- Ingredient A
- Ingredient B
- Vitamin B6
- Alpha Arbutin
- Sym-White
- N-acetyl Glucosamine
Considering my previous skin reaction and the goals of anti-aging and whitening, please review this proposed formula. Specifically, I would like to know:
- Is Vitamin B6 suitable for this formula and my skin type?
- Can I substitute Vitamin B6 with N-acetyl Glucosamine (3%)?
- Can I include both Alpha Arbutin and Sym-White in the same formula?
- What are the potential interactions or irritation risks of these ingredients, especially given my sensitive skin?
Answer
Thank you for your message.
Regarding the first Vitamin C serum that didn't mix well and caused a reaction: The staff suggested the mixing issue might be due to undissolved Hyaluronic Acid, which can be helped by using cold temperatures. The skin reaction (redness, dryness, flaking) does indicate an allergy, and caution is advised with that formula. Patch testing on a small area like the inner elbow or behind the ear is recommended if you try it again.
Regarding your proposed second formula: The staff advised removing Vitamin B6 as it's more suitable for oily skin and may not be compatible. Substituting Vitamin B6 with N-acetyl Glucosamine (3%) is acceptable. The staff does not recommend adding Sym-White in addition to Alpha Arbutin due to the potential for irritation, especially given your skin's reaction. If you wish to use Sym-White, it's recommended to replace Alpha Arbutin with it instead.
The modified formula (excluding Vitamin B6 and choosing either Alpha Arbutin or Sym-White, plus N-acetyl Glucosamine) contains ingredients targeting anti-aging and whitening, as per your objective.
