Question
I am formulating a serum using the following ingredients:
- Silky Serum Base (initial plan)
- Avocado Oil 5%
- Capryloyl Salicylic Acid (LHA) Liquid 10%
- MSH White™ 2%
- N-Acetyl-D Glucosamine 4%
- Vitamin B3 4%
- Alpha Arbutin 2%
- Natural Moisturizing Amino Acids 5%
- Vitamin B6 3%
I am concerned that adding 10% Capryloyl Salicylic Acid (LHA) Liquid will significantly lower the pH. I plan to adjust the final pH to 5.5.
Could you please advise if:
- The choice of Silky Serum Base is suitable for this formulation, especially with 5% Avocado Oil?
- My plan to adjust the pH to 5.5 after adding the LHA is correct?
- The overall percentages of all ingredients are acceptable?
Answer
Serum Formulation Feedback
You have a valid concern about the pH impact of 10% Capryloyl Salicylic Acid (LHA) Liquid. LHA is acidic, and at this concentration, it will definitely lower the pH of your formulation.
The staff's advice is correct:
- Mix the LHA Liquid in the water phase along with other water-soluble ingredients.
- After mixing, measure the pH.
- Adjust the pH upwards to your target of 5.5 by adding Triethanolamine drop by drop while stirring, measuring frequently until the desired pH is reached.
Regarding the overall percentages:
- The staff correctly identified that the original Silky Serum Base is not suitable for a formula with 5% Avocado Oil (7% total oil phase including potential oils in the base). This can lead to separation over time.
- Their recommendation to switch to Silky Serum Base Plus is appropriate as it is designed to emulsify and stabilize formulations containing oils, ensuring long-term stability.
- The percentages of other active ingredients like MSH White™ (2%), N-Acetyl-D Glucosamine (4%), Vitamin B3 (4%), Alpha Arbutin (2%), Natural Moisturizing Amino Acids (5%), and Vitamin B6 (3%) are within typical recommended usage rates for these ingredients in cosmetic formulations aimed at skin brightening and conditioning.
In summary, your formulation concept is sound, but you must follow the staff's advice on using Silky Serum Base Plus for stability and carefully adjust the pH using Triethanolamine after adding the LHA Liquid to achieve your target pH of 5.5.
