Sharing Formula Results and Question about Adding MSM for Oil Control
Question
Based on my custom formula for oily/dehydrated skin, which contains:
- GlutaBright
- Arbutin
- Sea Kelp
- Rice Vitamin
- B3
- GotuKola
- HYA
After using it for 4 days, I have observed reduced oiliness and improved skin softness. I would like to know if adding Pure MSM™ to this formula to further reduce oiliness, while keeping the existing moisturizing ingredients, would make the formula too drying for individuals with dry or normal skin types?
Answer
Response to Your Formula Experience and MSM Question
Thank you for sharing your positive experience with your custom formula! It's great to hear that you've seen a reduction in oiliness and improved skin softness and hydration after just four days, even with multiple moisturizing ingredients. This suggests the combination of actives is working well for your skin's specific needs (oily but dehydrated).
Regarding your question about adding Pure MSM™ (Methylsulfonylmethane) to further reduce oiliness while keeping the moisturizing ingredients and ensuring it's suitable for both oily/dehydrated and dry/normal skin types:
MSM's Effect: Based on the product description, Pure MSM™ is known for its oil control properties by reducing sebum production. It can be used in concentrations of 1-5% for this purpose (recommended 3%). It also has exfoliating properties at higher concentrations (above 3%), which can help with acne-prone skin.
Impact on Your Formula: Adding MSM to your existing formula, which already contains moisturizing ingredients like Sea Kelp Extract, Rice Vitamin (Inositol), and Hyaluronic Acid, could help balance the oil control effect of MSM with hydration. Vitamin B3 (Niacinamide) also contributes to oil control and strengthening the skin barrier, which complements MSM.
Suitability for Different Skin Types:
- For your oily/dehydrated skin, the addition of MSM could further help manage excess oil while the other ingredients maintain hydration, potentially addressing both concerns effectively.
- For someone with dry or normal skin, adding MSM might make the formula too drying, especially if used at higher concentrations. The existing moisturizing ingredients might help counteract this to some extent, but it's possible it could still feel less comfortable or cause dryness for those with already dry skin.
Recommendation:
If you want to add MSM, start with a low concentration (e.g., 1-2%) and observe the effects on both your skin and the skin of someone with a drier type. You might find that a lower concentration provides sufficient oil control for you without being overly drying for others. The overall balance of ingredients will determine the final feel and effect on different skin types.
It's wonderful that you and your partner are seeing good results, and we look forward to hearing about your experience with the firming and anti-wrinkle testers!
