Shaving Gel Formulation using Polyglide™

Question

I would like to make a shaving product, either a gel or cream, that provides lubrication to reduce friction and skin irritation from the razor blade. I understand that Polyglide™ is a key ingredient for this purpose.

Could you provide a sample formula for a shaving gel using Polyglide™? I saw an example formula in the staff's reply with the following ingredients and percentages:

  • Water: q.s. to 100%
  • Polyglide™: 3-5%
  • Pro Polymer™: 1%
  • Phenoxyethanol SA: 1%

Could you confirm if this formula is suitable and provide instructions on how to mix it? Also, could Polyglide™ be added to an existing gel or cream base, or a formula that also includes cleansing agents?

Answer

Shaving Gel Formulation

Here is a simple formula for making your own shaving gel, based on the ingredients suitable for creating a smooth surface to reduce razor irritation:

Ingredients:

  • Water: q.s. to 100%
  • Polyglide™: 3-5%
  • Pro Polymer™: 1%
  • Phenoxyethanol SA: 1%

Instructions:

  1. Measure the required amount of water.
  2. Add Polyglide™ to the water. Heat the mixture to approximately 80°C and stir until the Polyglide™ powder is completely dissolved.
  3. Allow the mixture to cool down.
  4. Once cooled, slowly sprinkle Pro Polymer™ powder onto the surface of the water mixture while stirring gently. Continue stirring slowly until a gel texture forms and the powder is fully hydrated. This step may take some time, and it's important to avoid high-speed mixing (above 2500 rpm) to prevent damaging the polymer.
  5. When the gel has formed and the temperature is below 60°C, add Phenoxyethanol SA and mix until it is evenly distributed throughout the gel.
  6. Your shaving gel is now ready to use.

This formula provides the necessary slip for shaving using Polyglide™, creates the gel texture with Pro Polymer™, and includes Phenoxyethanol SA as a broad-spectrum preservative to ensure product stability and safety.
