Shelf Life of Color Mixed with Water and How to Extend It

Color powders for cosmetic use generally have a very long shelf life. Even when dissolved in water, the color powder itself does not degrade.

However, the main issue that shortens the shelf life of color mixed with water is microbial growth in the water. If the water used for mixing is not pure, or if contamination occurs during storage, it can lead to spoilage.

To extend the shelf life of the color mixed with water to approximately 2 years as desired, it is necessary to add a preservative to the colored water mixture.

Recommended Method and Preservatives

1. Use Purified Water for Mixing: It is recommended to use purified distilled water (Purified Water) for mixing the color to reduce the risk of initial contamination.
2. Add a Preservative: Add a water-soluble preservative at a concentration of approximately 1% of the volume of the colored water mixture. This will prevent the growth of bacteria, mold, and yeast.
   • Suitable water-soluble preservatives that are effective at around 1% include:
     • Global Guard™ 221: A liquid, highly water-soluble, used at 0.5-1.1%, effective in a wide pH range of 2-7.
     • Mild Preserved™ COS: A clear, odorless liquid, highly water-soluble, used at 0.75-1.5%, effective in a wide pH range of 2-8.
     • NaturePreserve™ Ultra: A white powder, water-soluble, used at 0.75-2.0% (1.25% recommended), effective in a pH range of 3-6.
3. Storage: Store the colored water mixture with preservative in a tightly sealed container and keep it at room temperature, away from direct sunlight or heat.

Following these steps, especially adding a preservative, will help extend the usability of the color mixed with water, allowing it to be stored for a longer period.
