Question

I would like to formulate a silicone-based primer similar to Smashbox Photo Finish Primer. The desired properties are good makeup adhesion, a smooth texture, and a non-sticky feel.

Could you please provide a sample formula and mixing instructions for a primer based on silicone gel (Dimethicone crosspolymer) as the main ingredient (around 60-70%), along with other potential ingredients like sunscreen (e.g., Ethylhexyl Salicylate), skin beneficial ingredients (e.g., retinyl palmitate, Vitamin B3), preservative (e.g., Phenoxyethanol), and an emulsifier (e.g., SiliSolve Plus™)?

Answer

Smashbox Photo Finish Primer Inspired Formula

This formula focuses on the key components mentioned for a silicone-based primer.

  • Silicone Gel (Medium Matte, Dimethicone Base, High Viscosity) or similar Dimethicone Crosspolymer gel: 60%
  • Octisalate / Ethylhexyl Salicylate / Octyl Salicylate (for UV protection, optional): 3%
  • Safe-B3™ (Vitamin B3, Niacinamide) (for skin benefits): 5%
  • Phenoxyethanol (Extra Pure) (preservative): 0.3% (adjust based on water content, typically 1% of the water phase)
  • SiliSolve Plus™ (emulsifier for water/oil/silicone): 1%
  • Water: Remaining percentage (adjust based on other ingredients to reach 100%)

Mixing Instructions:

  1. Combine the Silicone Gel, Octisalate / Ethylhexyl Salicylate / Octyl Salicylate, and SiliSolve Plus™. Stir until homogeneous.
  2. In a separate container, mix the water, Safe-B3™, and Phenoxyethanol.
  3. Gradually add the water mixture to the silicone mixture from step 1, adding a little at a time and stirring continuously until fully incorporated and a gel-cream texture is formed.

This formulation provides the silicone base for the primer effect, along with optional beneficial ingredients and necessary preservation.
