คำถาม

I previously used a mix of two silicones, Silicone 1501 and Silicone DC 344, for hair conditioning. However, they are not water-soluble, which prevents me from incorporating water-based vitamins or herbal extracts. Could you recommend alternative silicones or other substances that can coat hair after washing to make it soft and smooth, allow for the inclusion of water-based vitamins, and preferably are not silicones? Please advise. I previously used Silicone 1501 and Silicone DC 344.

Silicone-Free Water-Soluble Hair Conditioners

Based on your need for water-soluble or water-dispersible alternatives to Silicone 1501 and Silicone DC 344 that can condition hair and allow for the inclusion of water-based vitamins and herbals, here are some recommendations.

Several ingredients can provide excellent hair conditioning, softness, and smoothness without being silicones and are soluble in water, making them ideal for your serum formulation with water-based additives.

  • Poly-Conditioner Pro (Polyquaternium-10): This is a great silicone-free option specifically designed to replace silicones in hair products. It coats the hair to provide softness and smoothness and is water-soluble, although it requires specific steps and potentially heat to dissolve properly. It's commonly used in silicone-free shampoos and conditioners.
  • Poly-Conditioner 47 (Polyquaternium-47): This polymer is highly compatible with various surfactants and dissolves easily in water. It excels at detangling and improving both wet and dry combability, leaving hair feeling soft and moisturized.
  • Poly-Conditioner 28 (Polyquaternium-28): Another water-soluble polymer that forms a clear, flexible film on the hair. It provides good conditioning and manageability without significant build-up and improves wet combability.

These Polyquaternium compounds are cationic polymers that bind to the negatively charged surface of damaged hair, providing conditioning benefits like smoothness, softness, and reduced static without the water insolubility issues of some silicones.

Beneficial Water-Soluble Additives

To enhance your serum with nourishing properties, you can incorporate water-soluble active ingredients:

  • Hydrolyzed Keratin: This protein is hydrolyzed to penetrate the hair shaft, helping to protect and restore damaged hair. It can improve hair strength, moisture, and shine and is easily soluble in water, making it perfect for your formulation.

By using these water-soluble conditioning polymers and active ingredients, you can create a hair serum that provides the desired softness and smoothness while allowing you to easily incorporate water-based vitamins and herbal extracts, overcoming the limitations you experienced with Silicone 1501 and Silicone DC 344.
