Question

I have oily, dehydrated skin with large pores, uneven skin tone/dullness, and fine lines. I want to address these issues with the following formulation:

  • Aloe Vera Gel (Heavy) = 43%
  • Alpha Arbutin = 2%
  • Witch Hazel (Distilled-Alcohol Free) = 50%
  • Matrixyl 3000 = 5%

Please advise on the mixing order and if any ingredients should be increased or decreased to better suit my skin concerns.

Answer

Review of Your Skincare Formulation

Thank you for sharing your formulation! You've selected ingredients that target your concerns: oily, dehydrated skin, large pores, uneven tone, and fine lines.

Here's a look at the ingredients and their roles:

  • Aloe Vera Gel (Heavy): Acts as the base, providing hydration and soothing properties, which is good for dehydrated skin.
  • Alpha Arbutin: Known for its skin brightening effects, helping to address uneven skin tone and dullness. The 2% concentration is standard and effective.
  • Witch Hazel (Distilled-Alcohol Free): Often used for its astringent properties, helping to minimize the appearance of pores and control oil. Being alcohol-free is better for avoiding excessive dryness.
  • Matrixyl 3000: A peptide blend targeting fine lines and wrinkles, suitable for addressing your anti-aging concerns. The 5% concentration is typical for this ingredient.

Your percentages add up to 100%, which is correct.

Consideration:

The percentage of Witch Hazel at 50% is quite high. While it's alcohol-free, such a high concentration could potentially still be drying or irritating for skin that is already dehydrated, even if it's oily. It might counteract the hydrating benefits of the Aloe Vera Gel.

Suggestion:

Consider reducing the Witch Hazel percentage, perhaps to 10-20%, and increasing the Aloe Vera Gel base accordingly. Alternatively, you could keep the Witch Hazel lower and add another hydrating ingredient like Hyaluronic Acid to better address the dehydration.

Mixing Order:

Generally, for this type of formulation, you would mix the water-soluble active ingredients (Alpha Arbutin, Matrixyl 3000) into your base (Aloe Vera Gel). Ensure they are fully dissolved or dispersed. Then, gradually add the Witch Hazel while mixing until everything is homogenous.

Important: Always perform a patch test on a small area of skin before applying the product to your entire face to check for any adverse reactions.
