Solubility and Application of β-Sitosterol in Cosmetic and Food Formulations

β-Sitosterol is not water-soluble.

It is a phytosterol, which is a lipophilic (fat-soluble) compound.

Solubility and Application in Formulations:

• Solubility: β-Sitosterol is soluble in organic solvents and oils (e.g., vegetable oils, esters).
• Cosmetics: For use in cosmetic products like creams or lotions, β-Sitosterol must be incorporated into the oil phase of the formulation before emulsification. It is suitable for oil-based serums, balms, and the oil phase of O/W or W/O emulsions.
• Food/Nutraceuticals: In food and supplement applications, it is typically incorporated into fat-containing products or used in solid dosage forms (capsules, tablets). If a water-based application (like a beverage) is required, special techniques such as microencapsulation or the use of strong emulsifiers/solubilizers are necessary to create a stable dispersion or nano-emulsion.
