Question

Regarding an oil-based serum formulation:

  • Do I need a solubilizer or heat to dissolve the ingredients?
  • Should I add 10-15% LipidSoft™ Dry to lighten the texture?
  • Can I add Cyclomethicone to enhance smoothness?

Answer

Based on the information provided:

  • Mixing Compatibility: Most of the ingredients can be mixed together in an oil base.
  • Solubilizers/Heat: You do not need a solubilizer for the oil-soluble ingredients. For Retinal (Retinaldehyde), applying slight heat (50-60°C) can help it dissolve faster.
  • Proportion Adjustment: 1,2-Hexanediol is not soluble in oil and is not necessary for this formula as it contains no water (thus no preservative is needed). It should be removed from the formula. The proportions of the remaining ingredients would then need to be adjusted to total 100%.
  • Adding LipidSoft™ Dry and Cyclomethicone:
    • LipidSoft™ Dry is soluble in oil and can be added to the formula, for example, at 10-15% as you suggested, to help lighten the texture.
    • Cyclomethicone is not soluble in oil and cannot be added to this formula.
