Squalene substitute options for lipstick formulations

Question

Since many lipstick formulas recommended by the admin include Squalene, but when I clicked in, I could not find the product. So I would like to ask what can be used instead? Thank you very much.

Answer

Squalene is a good ingredient in lipstick formulations as it helps provide moisture, adjust viscosity, and give shine. If the Squalene (Synthetic, For Lip Gloss) product is unavailable, you can use other ingredients with similar properties as substitutes, considering the specific properties you want to emphasize in your lipstick.

Here are some ingredients that can be used as alternatives:

  • Squalane (Olive): This is natural Squalane derived from olives. It has excellent moisturizing properties, absorbs quickly, and is well-suited as an emollient in lipstick. However, its texture is slightly lighter than synthetic Squalene.
  • LipidSoft™ Lanolin: This is an emollient developed to replace Lanolin, providing a texture and feel similar to natural Lanolin. It has high stability and is commonly used in lip products such as lip balm and lipstick.
  • LipidSoft™ Shine: This is a highly glossy ester, ideal for formulations that require a shine-enhancing effect, such as lipstick and lip gloss. If you want to replace the shine property of Squalene, this is a good option.
  • Mineral Oil (Paraffinum Liquidum) Heavy: This is a common base oil used in lip products. It provides softness and smoothness, is non-greasy, highly stable, and inexpensive. It can be used as a primary component in lipstick formulations.

The choice of substitute depends on which properties you want to emphasize. If you want to focus on moisture and natural origin, Squalane (Olive) is a good choice. If you want a texture similar to Lanolin, choose LipidSoft™ Lanolin. If you need extra shine, consider LipidSoft™ Shine. Mineral Oil is a basic option that provides good softness and smoothness.
