Stabilized Vitamin C Serum: Color Change and Stability
Question
I purchased [Product Name: Stabilized Vitamin C (Natural-C Glycol™) Serum] in May. I had an allergic reaction (acne breakout) and stopped using it. The allergy has cleared up now.
When I tried to use the serum yesterday, I noticed the color was much more yellow than when I bought it.
- Should I continue using it?
- Is it still stable?
Is it dangerous to use, or is this color change normal?
Note: I stored it in an opaque spray bottle in a drawer, away from direct sunlight/light.*
Answer
Stabilized Vitamin C (Natural-C Glycol™) Serum Color Change
Thank you for your question regarding the color change of your Stabilized Vitamin C (Natural-C Glycol™) Serum.
Based on the product information, Stabilized Vitamin C (Natural-C Glycol™) Serum is initially a light yellow clear liquid. While it is designed to be a stable form of Vitamin C and can be stored at room temperature away from light, a noticeable change to a darker yellow or orange color typically indicates that some oxidation has occurred.
Oxidation reduces the potency and effectiveness of Vitamin C. Although using an oxidized Vitamin C serum is generally not harmful, it will not provide the full benefits, such as skin brightening and antioxidant protection, as effectively as a fresh product.
You mentioned storing it in an opaque bottle in a drawer, which is good practice for protecting it from light. However, for long-term storage and to maintain maximum stability, especially in warmer climates or over several months, refrigeration (at 6-8°C) is recommended.
The increased yellowness suggests that the serum's effectiveness may have decreased. While it's unlikely to be dangerous, for optimal results, it would be best to use a fresh product.
