Storage of Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate: Can Preservatives Replace Refrigeration?

Question

I understand that the ingredient Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate can be used up to 100%.

However, I have issues with storing it in the refrigerator, as the storage instructions recommend keeping it at a low temperature.

If refrigeration is not possible, can I add preservatives to maintain its quality without needing to refrigerate it?

Thank you.

Answer

Storage of Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate

Regarding the storage of Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate and the possibility of using preservatives instead of refrigeration:

Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate is a fermentation product. While fresh product does not have a strong odor, it can develop a characteristic smell over time due to yeast fermentation activity. The manufacturer recommends storing the product in a refrigerator at 4-8°C to maintain its quality and achieve the stated shelf life of 24 months.

There are different versions of Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate available. One version, Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate (aka Pitera), contains Butylene Glycol, which acts as a preservative. Another version, Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate (Glycol Free, Glycerin Free, Preservative Free), is marketed as preservative-free but contains ingredients like Hydroxyacetophenone and 1,2-hexanediol which have preservative properties.

While these ingredients help in preserving the product, the primary recommendation for achieving the full 24-month shelf life and maintaining optimal quality is still refrigeration. Storing the product at room temperature, even with these preserving agents, may lead to faster changes in odor or appearance compared to refrigerated storage, and the 24-month shelf life might not be guaranteed.

Therefore, while adding more preservatives might help to some extent at room temperature, it cannot fully replace the stability and shelf life benefits provided by refrigeration as recommended by the manufacturer. It is best to follow the recommended storage conditions (refrigeration) for the best quality and longevity of the product.
