Question

I am developing a scrub formulation. Can I use edible sucrose (normal sugar) in the formula? What are the differences and considerations compared to using cosmetic-grade sucrose, particularly regarding particle size, purity, and potential effects on the skin?

Answer

Subject: Scrub - Sucrose Grade

Regarding the use of Sucrose (sugar) in your scrub formulation:

Sucrose is the chemical name for sugar, whether it's edible sugar or cosmetic-grade sugar.

While edible sugar can technically be used, as mentioned in the previous reply, there are important differences:

  • Particle Size: Edible sugar often has inconsistent and potentially large particle sizes. In a scrub, large particles can be too abrasive and potentially cause micro-tears on the skin. Cosmetic-grade sucrose is processed to have a consistent, finer particle size suitable for exfoliation.
  • Purity and Processing: Cosmetic-grade ingredients generally undergo stricter processing and purity standards to ensure they are free from contaminants and suitable for skin application.

Therefore, while you can use finely ground edible sugar (like the Mitr Phol example given), cosmetic-grade sucrose is generally recommended for better consistency, optimal exfoliation effectiveness, and reduced risk of skin irritation due to particle size and purity.
