Sun Protection in Lip Balm with Zinc Oxide Liquid
Question
When formulating a lip balm for sun protection using Zinc Oxide 35nm Liquid, what percentage of this ingredient should be included? Is using 5% sufficient for sun protection?
Answer
Sun Protection in Lip Balm using Zinc Oxide 35nm Liquid
To add sun protection to your lip balm using Zinc Oxide 35nm Liquid, the recommended usage rate is 5-40%.
Using 5% is within the recommended range, but it may not provide a high level of SPF/PA protection. The exact percentage needed depends on the desired SPF/PA value you want to achieve in your final lip balm product.
For broad-spectrum protection (covering both UVA and UVB rays), it is highly recommended to use Zinc Oxide 35nm Liquid in conjunction with Titanium Dioxide 15nm Liquid.
Please note that according to FDA regulations, the maximum allowed concentration of active Zinc Oxide is 25%. Since Zinc Oxide 35nm Liquid contains 45-48% active Zinc Oxide, this means you should not use more than approximately 50% of the Zinc Oxide 35nm Liquid product in your formulation.
To determine the precise SPF/PA value of your lip balm, the final formulation must be tested.
