Question

I am trying to formulate a sunscreen for use on tissue. My goals are to achieve a non-sticky, fast-drying texture, and include whitening and moisturizing properties. I am considering using the following ingredients:

  • Zinc Oxide
  • Titanium Dioxide
  • Cyclomethicone
  • Dimethicone
  • Light Cream Maker™
  • Water

Could you please provide feedback on this ingredient list and suggest modifications or additions to achieve the desired properties for a sunscreen tissue?

Answer

Sunscreen Formulation for Tissue

Based on your goal to create a non-sticky, fast-drying sunscreen for tissue with whitening and moisturizing properties, here's an analysis of your proposed ingredients and suggestions for modification:

Analysis of Your Current Ingredients:

  • Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide: These are physical sunscreen filters that provide UV protection. For a sunscreen, especially one aiming for minimal whiteness and good dispersion in a lighter format like a tissue, consider using treated or dispersed versions. For example, Zinc Oxide 200nm EasyDisperse™ or Zinc Oxide 40nm Dispersion (Water Base) and Titanium Dioxide Transparent (15nm, Dimethicone Coated) or Titanium Dioxide Transparent (15nm, Water-Dispersion) are designed for better dispersion and less white cast compared to standard micronized powders.
  • Cyclomethicone: This is a volatile silicone that evaporates quickly, contributing significantly to a fast-drying and non-greasy feel. It's a good choice for your goal.
  • Dimethicone: This silicone provides slip and a smooth feel. As noted in previous feedback, using too much or a high viscosity type can lead to stickiness. Using a lower viscosity Dimethicone (such as Dimethicone (Light/50) or Dimethicone (Very Light/5)) at a controlled percentage can provide the desired slip without excessive stickiness. You could also consider LipidSoft™ D5 as a silicone-free alternative to Cyclomethicone, which also provides a dry, light feel.
  • Light Cream Maker™: This is an oil-in-water emulsifier that creates a light, non-gooey cream texture without needing heat. This seems suitable for achieving a light, easily absorbed consistency for a tissue application.
  • Water: This will be the base of your formulation.

Suggestions for Modification and Addition:

  1. Sunscreen Actives: Ensure you are using sunscreen-grade, well-dispersible forms of Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide to achieve effective and even UV protection with minimal white residue. Water-dispersible versions like Zinc Oxide 40nm Dispersion (Water Base) and Titanium Dioxide Transparent (15nm, Water-Dispersion) would integrate well into a water-based tissue formula.
  2. Reduce Stickiness: Adjust the amount and type of Dimethicone. Opt for lower viscosity versions like Dimethicone (Light/50) or Dimethicone (Very Light/5) and use them at the minimum effective concentration to provide slip without stickiness.
  3. Add Whitening: Your current list does not include a whitening agent. You can add a water-soluble whitening ingredient to the water phase. Options include GlyciWhite™ or Hexylresorcinol AF, both known for their skin brightening properties.
  4. Add Moisturizing: To add moisturizing properties, incorporate a water-soluble humectant or moisturizing complex into the water phase. MOIST72™ is an excellent choice for long-lasting hydration, or you could use Natural Moisturizing Amino Acids which mimic the skin's natural moisturizing factors.
  5. Consider the Format: Since this is for a tissue, the overall viscosity should be low enough to saturate the tissue evenly but still provide a pleasant feel on the skin. The combination of volatile silicones like Cyclomethicone and a light emulsifier like Light Cream Maker™ should help achieve this.

By selecting the appropriate types of sunscreen actives, adjusting the silicones, and adding specific whitening and moisturizing ingredients, you can refine your formula to meet your desired characteristics for a non-sticky, fast-drying sunscreen tissue.
