Question
I have a formulation with the following ingredients:
- Water 83%
- Allantoin 0.5%
- Alpha-Arbutin 1%
- Turmeric Extract 3%
- Phenoxyethanol 0.5%
- Vitamin B3 (Niacinamide) 2% used with n-acetyl glucosamine 4%
- Soy Extract 3%
I need a thickener and would like recommendations for one to use at a 3% concentration. Please advise.
Answer
Thickener Recommendation for Your Formulation
Based on the formulation you provided, which includes water, Allantoin, Alpha-Arbutin, Turmeric Extract, Phenoxyethanol, Vitamin B3 (Niacinamide), n-acetyl glucosamine, and Soy Extract, you are looking for a thickener to use at 3% concentration.
Considering the ingredients and the desired usage rate, here are some suitable options:
- Carbomer 2020 (EasyDisperse, Electrolyte Tolerance, Long-flow): This thickener is suitable for use up to 3%, matching your requirement. It is known for its good electrolyte tolerance, which is beneficial in formulations containing various active ingredients like yours. It requires neutralization with an alkali (such as Triethanolamine or Sodium Hydroxide) to form a gel.
- CreamMaker EG (e.q. Simulgel EG): This is another suitable option that can be used up to 3%. It is easy to use as it can be added to the water phase and works in cold process formulations. It also helps improve the texture of the final product.
Sepimax Zen was also found in the search results, but its recommended maximum usage rate is 2%, so it would not be suitable for your desired 3% concentration.
When choosing between Carbomer 2020 and CreamMaker EG, consider the desired texture and ease of formulation. Carbomer 2020 provides a slightly stretchy gel texture and requires neutralization, while CreamMaker EG is easier to use and offers a soft, light feel.
