Question

My Salicylic Acid gel product has become too thin. I want to add a gelling agent to thicken it back up. Which gelling agent can I add without using heat?

Answer

It's understandable that you want to restore the texture of your Salicylic Acid gel product. As the previous response mentioned, knowing the original ingredients is crucial for recommending a suitable gelling agent.

Here's why the ingredient list is important:

  • Compatibility: Different gelling agents work with different types of ingredients (solvents, other active ingredients, preservatives, etc.).
  • pH: Salicylic Acid is acidic, and many gelling agents are sensitive to pH levels. The original formula's pH and buffering system affect which thickeners will work.
  • Solvents: Salicylic Acid is often dissolved in specific solvents. The gelling agent must be compatible with this solvent system.

Without knowing the original formula, it's difficult to give a precise recommendation. Adding an incompatible gelling agent could cause separation, cloudiness, loss of efficacy, or further destabilize the product.

While there are gelling agents that can be added without heat (like certain Carbomers, Acrylates crosspolymers, or Hydroxyethylcellulose), their suitability depends entirely on the existing ingredients.

Therefore, the best approach is to provide the full ingredient list from the product label so that a compatible gelling agent can be identified.
