Thickening Your Cream Formulation

Your current cream formulation is a water-in-oil emulsion containing a significant amount of oil (55%) and alcohol (~30%). To achieve a toothpaste-like consistency, you need a thickener that can handle these components and provide substantial viscosity.

Recommended Thickener: CreamThick™ (Hydroxypropyl Starch Phosphate)

CreamThick™ is a viscosity increasing agent that works well in the water phase of formulations. It is easy to use as it does not require heat and can be dispersed in cold or room temperature water. It is also resistant to electrolytes, which is beneficial given the components in your formula. CreamThick™ can provide a milky white, opaque gel texture and helps improve emulsion stability.

How to Use CreamThick™

1. Disperse in Water: CreamThick™ should be dispersed in the water phase of your formulation at room temperature or cold. Avoid using hot water (above 50°C) for dispersion. You can use a blender or stirrer to ensure it is fully dispersed.
2. Add to Formula: Once dispersed in the water phase, you can incorporate this thickened water phase into your overall formulation according to your existing process for creating the emulsion.
3. Usage Rate: To achieve a significant increase in viscosity towards a toothpaste-like consistency, you will likely need to use CreamThick™ at a higher concentration. The recommended usage rate is 0.5-5%, with at least 4% suggested if used as the primary thickener. You may need to start at 3-5% or slightly higher and adjust based on your desired final texture.

Experimentation will be necessary to find the exact percentage of CreamThick™ that gives you the desired toothpaste consistency in your specific formula. Add it gradually and mix thoroughly to observe the thickening effect.
