Question

I have normal skin with an oily T-zone and sensitivity. I am looking for a formulation (like a toner) that can help with the following concerns:

  • Skin brightening
  • Reducing the appearance of pores
  • Treating different types of acne (clogged, inflamed, and rash-like acne)

Answer

Toner Formulation for Normal to Oily T-Zone Skin (Focus on Brightening, Pores, Acne, Sensitive Skin)

For normal skin with an oily T-zone that is concerned with brightening, pore appearance, acne, and sensitivity, you can select ingredients with specific properties to create a toner. Here are some interesting ingredients:

Example Toner Formula (Adjust concentrations as appropriate for your needs):

  • Distilled Water or Floral Water: Approx. 80-90%
  • Tranexamic Acid (Trans-White™): 1-3%
  • Zinc PCA: 0.5-1%
  • Sebum-Reg™: 1-2%
  • Pep®-Acne: 5%
  • Licorice Extract: 0.5-1%
  • Portulaca Extract: 0.1-0.5%
  • Butylene Glycol (helps moisturize and acts as a solvent): 3-5% (can be adjusted down if other ingredients already contain Butylene Glycol)
  • Preservative: According to manufacturer's recommendation (essential for water-based formulas)
  • pH Adjuster (e.g., Triethanolamine, Citric Acid or Lactic Acid): Small amount for pH adjustment

Mixing Instructions:

  1. Prepare a portion of the distilled water or floral water (approx. 10-20% of the total formula). Adjust the pH slightly above 7 (using a small amount of Triethanolamine). Gradually add Sebum-Reg™ and stir or mix until clear.
  2. In another container, prepare the remaining distilled water or floral water. Dissolve Tranexamic Acid and Zinc PCA. Stir until dissolved.
  3. Slowly combine the mixture from step 1 with the mixture from step 2. Stir well.
  4. Add Pep®-Acne, Licorice Extract, Portulaca Extract, and Butylene Glycol. Stir gently to combine, avoiding high heat.
  5. Add the preservative according to the recommended rate. Stir to combine.
  6. Measure the pH of the formula. It should be in the range of 4-6 for optimal effectiveness of Zinc PCA and Sebum-Reg™. If the pH is higher than 6, gradually add a pH adjuster (e.g., Citric Acid or Lactic Acid) little by little, stirring and measuring the pH until the desired value is reached.
  7. Pour into a clean container.

Precautions:

  • Always test the product on a small area of skin before applying to the entire face, especially for sensitive skin.
  • Adjust ingredient percentages based on your skin condition and individual response.
  • Using Tranexamic Acid at concentrations up to 3% is considered cosmetics. Higher concentrations require registration as a medicine.
