Question

Hello! I want to make a Treatment Oil (usable on both face and body) with a formula that focuses on helping to reduce acne, wrinkles, scars, and revitalize skin for brightness. It should not be sticky or irritating and should be suitable for sensitive, acne-prone skin. Could you please help review and analyze my formula? Do I need to add or remove anything? Or do you have any recommendations for ingredients and their proportions? How should I mix them?

Could you please help analyze this formula? Thank you.

Answer

Hello! I understand you want to create a Treatment Oil for face and body that focuses on reducing acne, wrinkles, scars, brightening skin, is non-greasy, and suitable for sensitive, acne-prone skin. You have listed several ingredients you are interested in. I have analyzed the properties of these ingredients based on your goals.

Analysis of Your Ingredients:

  • Passion Fruit Seed Oil (ID 9633): Rich in Linoleic acid, Omega 6 & 9, Vitamin E, and antioxidants. Anti-inflammatory, good for acne, wrinkles, and potentially scars. Lightweight feel.
  • Avocado Oil (ID 91): Highly moisturizing, helps with dark spots and scars. However, it is quite heavy and may feel greasy or clog pores for acne-prone skin if used in high amounts.
  • Abyssinian Oil (ID 1397): Lightweight, easily absorbed, provides a smooth skin feel. Good for a non-greasy base.
  • Aloe Vera Oil (Infused) (ID 1586): Soothing, helps with wound healing. Infused in Soybean Oil, which can be comedogenic for some. May not be as lightweight as desired.
  • Grape Seed Oil (ID 120): High in Linoleic acid, excellent for acne-prone skin (reduces clogged pores). Antioxidant, helps with wrinkles. Lightweight, easily absorbed.
  • Safflower Seed Oil (ID 127): Also high in Linoleic acid, good for acne and wrinkles. Moisturizing without being greasy.
  • Vitamin C Ester (Ascorbyl Palmitate) (ID 200): Oil-soluble antioxidant, stimulates collagen, helps heal scars. While the manufacturer notes user feedback about limited brightening, its other benefits are valuable.
  • Vitamin E (Tocopheryl Acetate) (ID 65) and Vitamin E (dl-alpha tocopherol) (ID 135): Both are antioxidants. dl-alpha tocopherol is more potent for skin benefits but stickier and less stable. Tocopheryl Acetate is more stable and helps protect the formula. Using both can be beneficial.
  • Decanoic Acid: Not commonly used alone in cosmetics. If you intended a lightweight, non-greasy oil, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride is a better alternative.
  • LipidSoft™ Moist (Triethylhexanoin) (ID 990): Excellent synthetic emollient for a non-greasy, smooth feel. Does not clog pores.
  • Dimethyl Isosorbide (DMI) (ID 5987): Penetration enhancer, helps actives like Vitamin C and E absorb better.
  • Freeze Me™ (Menthone Glycerin Acetal) (ID 6182): Provides a cooling sensation. Not directly related to acne, wrinkles, or scars. Optional.

Recommendations for Your Treatment Oil Formula:

To achieve your goals, especially the non-greasy feel and suitability for acne-prone skin, I recommend focusing on lightweight oils and emollients:

  1. Base Oils: Prioritize oils high in Linoleic acid like Grape Seed Oil and Safflower Seed Oil, along with Abyssinian Oil and LipidSoft™ Moist. These provide a light texture and are beneficial for acne-prone skin. Consider adding Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride for extra lightness.
  2. Heavier Oils: Reduce or omit Avocado Oil and Aloe Vera Oil (due to Soybean Oil base) if a non-greasy feel and non-comedogenicity are top priorities. You could include them in very small amounts if you want some of their specific benefits.
  3. Actives: Include Vitamin C Ester and Vitamin E for anti-aging, scar healing, and antioxidant protection.
  4. Penetration: Use Dimethyl Isosorbide to enhance the delivery of your active ingredients.
  5. Cooling: Include Freeze Me™ only if you desire a cooling sensation.

Sample Formula Structure (Adjust percentages as needed):

  • Lightweight Base Oils & Emollients (Total ~85-95%):
    • NaturalProfile™ Grape Seed Oil (ID 120)
    • NaturalProfile™ Safflower Seed Oil (ID 127)
    • Abyssinian Oil (ID 1397)
    • LipidSoft™ Moist (Triethylhexanoin) (ID 990)
    • Optional: Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride
  • Specific Nourishing Oils (Total ~5-10%):
    • Passion Fruit Seed Oil (ID 9633) (Can be part of the base)
    • Optional, in small amounts (1-3%): Avocado Oil (ID 91) or Aloe Vera Oil (Infused) (ID 1586)
  • Active Ingredients:
    • Vitamin C Ester (Ascorbyl Palmitate) (ID 200): 1-3%
    • Vitamin E (dl-alpha tocopherol) (ID 135): 0.5-1%
    • Optional: Vitamin E (Tocopheryl Acetate) (ID 65): 0.1-0.5%
  • Penetration Enhancer:
    • Dimethyl Isosorbide (DMI) (ID 5987): 1-5% (Recommended 3%)
  • Cooling Agent (Optional):
    • Freeze Me™ (Menthone Glycerin Acetal) (ID 6182): 0.1-5%

Mixing Instructions:

  1. Combine all lightweight base oils and emollients.
  2. If using Vitamin C Ester (Ascorbyl Palmitate), gently heat the oil mixture (up to 70°C briefly) to help it dissolve. Stir until dissolved and let cool.
  3. Once the mixture has cooled (below 50°C, especially if using dl-alpha tocopherol), add the Vitamin C Ester (if not heated), Vitamin E (both types if used), Dimethyl Isosorbide, and Freeze Me™ (if used).
  4. Stir thoroughly until all ingredients are well combined.
  5. Store in an opaque container away from light and heat.

This is a sample guideline, and you can adjust the oils and percentages based on your desired feel and results. Remember to patch test before full application.
