Underarm Lotion Formula for Sweat/Odor Control & Skin Benefits
Question
I am trying to create an underarm lotion for sweat/odor control, whitening, and smoothing (addressing ingrown hairs and chicken skin). My previous attempt using Satin Cream Maker™ resulted in phase separation and liquefaction, which I suspect was due to the high electrolyte content from Anti-Sweat™ and SmellSorb™. Additionally, when I added Salicylic Acid EZ to the mixture containing Anti-Sweat™ and Safe-B3™, the formula turned dark brown, indicating incompatibility. I also had issues with Pro Polymer hardening during storage. Could you provide a lotion formula that is stable, addresses these compatibility issues, provides the desired benefits (sweat/odor control, whitening, smoothing), and has a non-sticky, fast-drying texture?
Answer
Underarm Lotion Formula (Sweat/Odor Control, Whitening/Smoothing)
This formula is designed to have a lotion texture that can be easily applied by hand, using ingredients expected to be compatible to address the separation and color change issues you encountered, as well as provide whitening and smoothing benefits.
Ingredients:
Water Phase:
- Water: 46.3%
- Anti-Sweat™ (Aluminum Chlorohydrate): 20% (Helps reduce sweat and body odor)
- Safe-B3™ (Vitamin B3, Niacinamide): 5% (Helps brighten skin, reduces dark spots)
- EDTA (Disodium EDTA): 0.2% (Helps improve formula stability)
- Optiphen Plus: 1% (Preservative)
Oil Phase:
- Butter Cream Maker™: 4% (Electrolyte-tolerant emulsifier, helps create lotion texture)
- LipidSoft Deo (Triethyl Citrate): 3% (Emollient for smooth skin feel, also has deodorant properties)
- Cyclomethicone: 10% (Volatile silicone, helps formula spread easily and dry quickly, non-greasy feel)
- Isododecane: 5% (Volatile hydrocarbon, helps make the formula lightweight and fast-drying)
- Capryloyl Salicylic Acid (LHA): 3% (A milder derivative of Salicylic Acid, helps exfoliate, reduce ingrown hairs and chicken skin, improves skin texture)
Additives:
- SmellSorb™ (Zinc Ricinoleate): 2% (Helps absorb and reduce body odor)
Instructions:
- Prepare Water Phase: In a heat-resistant container, combine Water, EDTA, Anti-Sweat™, Safe-B3™, and Optiphen Plus. Stir or mix until the powder ingredients are dissolved and the solution is clear (gentle warming may help dissolution, but high heat is not necessary).
- Prepare Oil Phase: In another container, combine Butter Cream Maker™, LipidSoft Deo, Cyclomethicone, Isododecane, and Capryloyl Salicylic Acid (LHA). Gently warm this phase (around 60-70°C) to melt the Butter Cream Maker™ and help disperse the LHA. Stir well.
- Combine Phases: Slowly pour the Oil Phase into the Water Phase gradually while stirring or mixing continuously. Use a whisk or hand blender for better emulsification, but avoid creating too much foam. Continue mixing until the mixture thickens and forms a uniform lotion.
- Add SmellSorb™: Once the emulsion is formed and has cooled slightly, add SmellSorb™ and stir well to disperse it evenly throughout the lotion.
- Package into a clean container.
Further Explanation:
- Separation/Liquefaction Issue: The previous formula using Satin Cream Maker™ likely could not tolerate the high electrolyte content from Anti-Sweat™ and SmellSorb™, causing the formula to become unstable and separate. Butter Cream Maker™ is an emulsifier designed to be more tolerant of electrolytes, which should help resolve this issue.
- Color Change Issue: The dark brown color change you observed when adding Salicylic Acid EZ to the mixture containing Anti-Sweat™ and Safe-B3™ indicates an incompatibility between Salicylic Acid EZ and those ingredients. This new formula suggests using Capryloyl Salicylic Acid (LHA) as a potentially more compatible alternative for smoothing, but testing a small batch first is still recommended.
- Pro Polymer Storage: Pro Polymer and other gel-forming ingredients are highly hygroscopic (absorb moisture from the air), causing them to clump and degrade. They should be stored in airtight containers, ideally with a desiccant. If it has hardened and changed color significantly as you described, it may be contaminated or degraded and should not be used.
- Texture: This formula will result in a lotion texture, not a completely dry-feel roll-on stick. However, the inclusion of Cyclomethicone and Isododecane will help the lotion spread easily, absorb quickly, and provide a comfortable, relatively dry feel on the skin compared to standard lotions.
- Yellow Stains: This formula does not contain ingredients typically known to cause yellow stains on clothing like some antiperspirant actives. However, using products with high levels of Aluminum Chlorohydrate can still leave white marks depending on application and fabric type.
Please try this formula and method. I hope it helps you create the product you are looking for!
