Question
I am developing a whitening cream for underarm use and am concerned about potential irritation from ingredients like Willow Bark, ODA, and Sym-White on this sensitive skin area.
Could you suggest a gentle yet effective formula for an underarm whitening cream that also addresses sweat and odor?
Please provide:
- Ingredient list and percentages
- Mixing instructions
- Any important notes regarding formulation, ingredient compatibility, and pH.
Answer
Underarm Whitening Cream Formula
This formula is designed to be a leave-on cream for morning and evening use.
Ingredients
Part A (Water Phase)
- Purified Water: q.s. to 100%
- Anti-Sweat (Aluminum Chlorohydrate): 20%
- Willow Bark Extract (Natural Salicylic Acid): 10%
- Safe-B3 (Vitamin B3, Niacinamide): 5%
- Smell sorb (CycloSorb™ Clear): 2%
- Phenoxyethanol SA (eq. Optiphen Plus): 1%
Part B (Oil Phase)
- Cyclopentasiloxane (Low-Odor Cyclomethicone): 20%
- Butter Cream Maker: 3%
- Light Cream Maker: 1%
- Natural Bisabolol (Brazil Chamomile): 0.5%
Instructions
- Combine all ingredients in Part A and mix until fully dissolved.
- Combine ingredients in Part B, except for Natural Bisabolol. Heat this mixture to approximately 70°C to ensure the emulsifiers melt and blend.
- Heat Part A to a similar temperature (around 70°C).
- While continuously mixing Part A, slowly add Part B. Blend or stir until a homogeneous cream is formed.
- Allow the cream to cool down to below 60°C.
- Add Natural Bisabolol and Phenoxyethanol SA to the cream and mix thoroughly until evenly distributed.
Notes on the Formula
- Whitening: This formula uses Safe-B3 (Niacinamide) as the primary whitening agent, which is generally well-tolerated and effective. Willow Bark Extract provides gentle exfoliation and other benefits. This combination is less likely to cause irritation compared to using multiple strong exfoliants/whiteners.
- Antiperspirant & Odor Control: Anti-Sweat (Aluminum Chlorohydrate) helps reduce sweating, while Smell sorb (CycloSorb™ Clear) is included to absorb odor. Note that if using Smell sorb (CycloSorb™ Clear), it is recommended not to include fragrance/essential oil as it can absorb the scent, reducing its odor-absorbing efficacy for sweat.
- Texture: Cyclopentasiloxane, Butter Cream Maker, and Light Cream Maker are used to create a light, non-greasy cream that absorbs well and feels dry on the skin, making it suitable for daily use as a roll-on alternative.
- Soothing: Natural Bisabolol helps to soothe the skin and reduce potential irritation from other active ingredients.
- pH Adjustment: With the ingredients included, the pH should ideally be checked to ensure it is within the effective range for the active ingredients and compatible with the emulsifiers and preservative. Safe-B3 works best between pH 4.0-7.0, Willow Bark Extract between 4.0-6.5, Anti-Sweat between 4-6, and Phenoxyethanol SA between 2.0-6.0. Aiming for a pH in the range of 4.0-6.0 would be suitable for this formula.
