Question
Can Encapsulated Caffeine (50% Caffeine Active) be used in a Lip Oil formulation?
- Is this ingredient soluble in oil?
Answer
Encapsulated Caffeine (50% Caffeine Active) is water-soluble and cannot be dissolved directly in oil.
Regarding its use in a Lip Oil formula:
- Solubility: Since it is water-soluble, it will not dissolve in a 100% oil-based formula (Lip Oil). If added, the powder will settle at the bottom and may feel gritty on the lips.
- Recommendation: This ingredient is best suited for formulas containing water, such as creams, lotions, or water-based serums.
- Usage in Lip Products: If you wish to use it in a lip product, it is recommended for water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions or lip creams that contain a water phase.
If your Lip Oil formula is purely oil-based, this specific encapsulated caffeine is not recommended. You would need an oil-soluble version or a surfactant/emulsifier to incorporate a water phase into the oil, though this would change the texture from a clear oil to an emulsion.
Usage Limits:
- Face: Not more than 3%
- Around the eyes: Not more than 2%
- Body: Not more than 5%
