Using BHA (Salicylic Acid) in Cleansing Gel for Dry Skin and Blackheads

Question

I have dry skin and blackheads/clogged pores. I am considering using a wash-off cleansing gel containing BHA (Salicylic Acid) to address these issues. I understand there are different types, such as Salicylic Acid EZ and Timed Release Salicylic Acid.

Could you please advise on the suitability of using BHA in a cleansing gel for dry skin? Are there specific types of BHA (like Salicylic Acid EZ) that are better suited than others? What concentration would be recommended, considering the potential for dryness and irritation on dry skin, even in a wash-off product?

Answer

Based on the staff's recommendation, for normal to dry skin, it is generally not advised to use BHA (Salicylic Acid), regardless of the type (including Salicylic Acid EZ). If used for blackheads or clogged pores, a very low concentration is recommended.

Even with a wash-off product like a cleansing gel and at low concentrations, there is still a risk of causing dryness for dry skin types. Therefore, while Salicylic Acid EZ was suggested as an alternative to the timed-release version, the primary advice for your skin type is caution or avoidance of BHA, or using it at the lowest possible effective concentration if absolutely necessary for blackheads, understanding the potential for increased dryness.
