คำถาม

I want to make a spray perfume for the body using the following formula:

  • Fragrance Oil: 25%
  • Dipropylene Glycol: 75%

Is this formula suitable? I am asking because I understand that Dipropylene glycol may not help diffuse the scent like alcohol and might be too viscous for a spray nozzle.

Hello,

Regarding your question about making a spray perfume for the body using 25% fragrance oil and 75% Dipropylene glycol, this formula is not suitable.

Here's why:

  • Scent Diffusion: Dipropylene glycol does not evaporate like Ethyl Alcohol. The evaporation of the base is crucial for carrying the fragrance molecules into the air, allowing you to smell the perfume. Since Dipropylene glycol does not evaporate, it will not effectively diffuse the scent.
  • Sprayability: Dipropylene glycol is more viscous than alcohol, making it difficult to spray properly through a fine mist nozzle.

Difference between Dipropylene glycol and Ethyl Alcohol as a base:

  • Ethyl Alcohol: This is the standard base for spray perfumes because it is volatile (evaporates quickly), which helps to disperse the fragrance molecules and project the scent. It also has a low viscosity, making it suitable for spraying.
  • Dipropylene glycol: While it can be used as a solvent for fragrance oils in other applications (like roll-on perfumes or diffusers), it is not suitable for spray perfumes due to its lack of volatility and higher viscosity. It will hinder scent diffusion rather than help it.

Therefore, for making a spray perfume, Ethyl Alcohol is the appropriate base to use.
