Question

I am working with Oil Stick™ Hard and Oil Stick™ Medium and want to achieve a clear formula using a fragrance fixative like Last Fix.

I have a few questions:

  1. Can I dissolve Oil Stick™ Hard and Oil Stick™ Medium directly with Last Fix?
  2. Does the high heat required to melt Oil Stick™ Hard and Oil Stick™ Medium affect Last Fix?
  3. If I melt Oil Stick™ Hard and Oil Stick™ Medium with other oil components first and then mix with fragrance that has Last Fix added, will the resulting formula be clear?
  4. If Last Fix is not suitable for achieving a clear formula with these ingredients, are there alternative fragrance fixatives, such as Sugar Fix, that might work?

Answer

Using Oil Stick™ Hard and Oil Stick™ Medium with Fragrance Fixatives

Regarding your questions about dissolving Oil Stick™ Hard and Oil Stick™ Medium with Last Fix and the effect of heat:

  1. Direct Dissolution with Last Fix: It is not recommended to dissolve Oil Stick™ Hard and Oil Stick™ Medium directly with Last Fix. The high temperatures required to melt the Oil Sticks (85-120°C depending on the oil type) can degrade Last Fix.

  2. Effect of High Heat on Last Fix: Yes, the high heat needed to melt Oil Stick™ Hard and Oil Stick™ Medium will likely cause Last Fix to degrade.

  3. Mixing Pre-melted Oil Sticks with Fragrance + Last Fix: Even if you melt the Oil Sticks with other oil components first and then mix with a fragrance that has Last Fix already added, the formula will likely not be clear. Last Fix has compatibility issues with Oil Sticks that result in a cloudy texture.

If you are aiming for a clear formula, you may need to consider alternative fragrance fixatives. Based on the information available, you could test using Sugar Fix. However, compatibility and clarity would need to be confirmed through your own testing.
