Question

I am formulating an herbal shampoo using the following ingredients:

  • N6000
  • CocoBetaine
  • mangosteen peel extract
  • honey
  • cold-pressed coconut oil
  • Lanolin
  • silk cocoon

I would like to use Thyme Care as the sole preservative at a concentration of 0.8%. Will this concentration be sufficient to preserve the formula, especially considering the natural ingredients? How long can I expect the finished product to remain stable and preserved?

Answer

Using Thyme Care™ as a Preservative in Herbal Shampoo

Based on the information available, Thyme Care™ can be used as a sole preservative in your herbal shampoo formula, provided that the natural ingredients (mangosteen peel extract, honey, and silk cocoon) are sourced from quality manufacturers with good standard control, are specifically produced for cosmetic use, and your manufacturing process follows proper hygiene and procedures.

Using Thyme Care™ at a concentration of 0.8% is generally sufficient to control microbial growth in cosmetic formulas, including the ingredients you listed (N6000, CocoBetaine, mangosteen peel extract, honey, cold-pressed coconut oil, Lanolin, silk cocoon).

Regarding the duration of effectiveness, the Thyme Care™ product itself has a minimum shelf life of 2 years when stored correctly (cool place, tightly closed cap, protected from sunlight/heat). However, the actual preservation period of your finished shampoo product depends on the specific formula composition, manufacturing hygiene, packaging, and storage conditions. To determine the exact shelf life and ensure effective preservation for your specific product, it is highly recommended to perform a Challenge Test on your finished formulation before mass production and distribution.
