คำถาม

I would like to know if I can use Warp Cream Maker™ and Silicone Gel to thicken a water-based toner. If I use 80% of a toner that originally contains 2% BHA, would the final BHA concentration in the new formula be 1.6%? Are there any suitable thickeners for water-based toners?

คำตอบ

Based on the information about Warp Cream Maker™ and Silicone Gel, these ingredients are designed for use in creating Water-in-Oil (W/O) or Water-in-Silicone (W/Si) emulsions.

  • Warp Cream Maker™ is an emulsifier that works to combine the water phase with the oil/silicone phase to create a stable cream or lotion texture. The emulsifier itself disperses well in the oil and silicone phases, not in water.
  • Silicone Gel is also an ingredient that helps improve texture, making it soft, smooth, light, and non-sticky. It disperses well in oil and silicone phases and does not dissolve or disperse in water.

Therefore, directly mixing Warp Cream Maker™ and Silicone Gel into a toner, which is mostly a water-based product, will not be able to thicken the toner and is highly likely to cause the ingredients to be incompatible and separate. This method is not about thickening a water base but attempting to create an emulsion, which requires both water and oil/silicone phases in appropriate proportions and using an emulsification process (combining the water and oil/silicone phases with an emulsifier).

Regarding the question about BHA concentration, if you use 80% of the toner (assuming the original toner contains 2% BHA), theoretically, the BHA concentration in the new formula would be reduced to 2% * 80% = 1.6%, which is correct. However, since the mixture you proposed is unlikely to be compatible and stable, it cannot be used effectively as intended.

If you want to thicken a water-based toner, you generally need to use gelling agents or thickeners that are soluble or disperse well in water, such as Hydroxyethyl cellulose that you mentioned, or other gums or polymers specifically used for water bases.

Conclusion: You cannot use Warp Cream Maker™ and Silicone Gel to directly thicken a toner because these ingredients are not compatible with a water base.
