Warm Vanilla Sugar Fragrance Performance in Liquid Soap

Question

I purchased the Warm Vanilla Sugar (Bath & Body Works) fragrance oil (500ml). When I smelled it concentrated, it had a bitter scent, which I thought might be due to the high concentration affecting my nose.

However, when I added it to liquid soap at just 1%, there was no scent at all, only the bitter smell remained. The same issue occurred when I tried 2%.

Could you please explain why this is happening and provide some advice? I added the fragrance directly to the liquid soap base.

Answer

Understanding Fragrance in Liquid Soap

It's not uncommon for concentrated fragrance oils to have a different smell, sometimes even a harsh or bitter note, compared to when they are diluted in a product. Your nose can get overwhelmed by the high concentration.

However, the issue of the scent disappearing completely when added to liquid soap, even at 1-2%, suggests a potential problem with compatibility or concentration.

Here are a few possible reasons and things to consider:

  • Fragrance Compatibility with Soap Base: Liquid soap bases, especially those containing strong surfactants, can sometimes react with or 'consume' certain fragrance components, causing the scent to weaken or disappear. Not all fragrance oils are designed to perform well in all types of soap bases.
  • Concentration Level: 1-2% might be too low a concentration for this particular fragrance to be noticeable in a wash-off product like liquid soap. Fragrances often require higher percentages in products that are rinsed off compared to leave-on products.
  • Fragrance Type: Some fragrance notes, particularly delicate or volatile ones, can be more susceptible to degradation or loss in challenging bases like liquid soap.

Recommendations:

  1. Try a Higher Concentration: Carefully test the fragrance at a higher percentage, perhaps 3-5%, in a small batch of your liquid soap to see if the scent becomes noticeable. Always check the recommended maximum usage rate for the fragrance if available (though I don't have specific data for this product from the description).
  2. Test in a Different Base: Try adding the fragrance to a different, simpler base like a carrier oil or even just water (though it won't dissolve) to see if the pleasant scent is present there. This helps determine if the issue is with the fragrance itself or its interaction with your specific soap base.
  3. Consider the Soap Base: The type of liquid soap base you are using can significantly impact fragrance performance. Some bases are known to be harder on fragrances than others.

The bitter smell when concentrated is less concerning than the complete lack of scent in the soap. The latter strongly points towards an issue with how the fragrance is performing in your chosen liquid soap base at those concentrations.
