Warming Sensation from Preservative in Sunscreen Formulation and Alternatives

Question

I am developing a sunscreen formulation and am experiencing a warming/burning sensation when using it. Based on the expert's response, it seems this is likely caused by the preservative Mild Preserved™ (Product ID 642).

I was considering adding FastRelief™ (Product ID 784) to the formula. Would this help reduce the warming sensation?

What other alternative preservatives are recommended for a sunscreen formulation to avoid this warming sensation and ensure good skin compatibility?

Answer

Based on the conversation, the burning/warming sensation you experienced from the sunscreen formulation is likely caused by Mild Preserved™ (Product ID 642). The staff confirmed that some individuals might feel a temporary warming sensation with this preservative, although it doesn't necessarily indicate an allergic reaction.

You asked about adding FastRelief™ (Product ID 784) to help. The staff conducted tests which showed that adding FastRelief™ at 1.0% significantly reduced the warming sensation from Mild Preserved™ (at 1.0%). However, FastRelief™ is relatively expensive and is generally recommended for formulas where irritation is unavoidable.

For the issue with Mild Preserved™, the staff recommends considering alternative preservatives that are more skin-compatible. These include:

  • Nano Silver Pure™ (Product ID 857) at 0.3%: This also has the benefit of helping to reduce the chance of allergy/irritation.
  • Global Guard™ (Product ID 879) at 1.0%: This is recommended if your formula has a pH below 5.5 and is known for high skin-compatibility.

These alternatives are suggested as potentially better options for individuals who experience the warming sensation with Mild Preserved™.
