Warming Sensation in Cleanser and Sprayability of Hyaluron Lotion

Question

I have two questions regarding cosmetic formulations:

  1. I tried making a mild facial cleanser for sensitive skin based on the formula found at mild-facial-cleanser-diy-t154.html. When using it, I feel a warming sensation, both on my face and hands. I suspect it might be due to Glycerin (which I sourced elsewhere, while other ingredients were from your website). Is this warming normal? If not, how can I fix it?

  2. I want to make a sprayable Hyaluron lotion. I tried using a mix of Hyaluronic Acid powder (Standard and Nano types) at a total concentration of 0.2%. However, it doesn't spray well, likely because it's too viscous. If I switch to using Double Hyaluron Liquid, will this solve the problem?

Answer

Answers to Your Formulation Questions

Here are the answers to your questions about your facial cleanser and hyaluronic acid lotion formulations:

1. Warming Sensation in Facial Cleanser

It is normal to feel a warming sensation when using a facial cleanser containing Glycerin. Glycerin is a humectant that attracts and retains moisture. When it comes into contact with water, a process called hydration occurs, which releases a small amount of heat. This warming effect is more noticeable if the Glycerin is not fully diluted or if used at higher concentrations.

To minimize this effect, ensure that all ingredients, including Glycerin, are thoroughly mixed into your formulation according to the recipe's instructions. If the warming is still too strong, you might consider slightly reducing the concentration of Glycerin in your formula, although this should be done carefully as it might affect the product's moisturizing properties.

2. Sprayable Hyaluron Lotion

You are correct that using Hyaluronic Acid powder (Standard Molecule and Super Low Molecule) at a total concentration of 0.2% might result in a texture that is too viscous for a spray bottle. Standard and Large Molecule Hyaluronic Acid are effective thickeners even at low percentages.

Switching to Double Hyaluron Liquid is a good approach for creating a sprayable lotion. Double Hyaluron Liquid is a pre-dissolved blend of Standard and Nano (Super Low Molecule) Hyaluronic Acid in liquid form, which makes it much easier to incorporate into formulations and generally results in a less viscous product compared to using the equivalent concentration of powder forms, especially the higher molecular weight ones.

For a sprayable lotion, you will need to use a concentration of Double Hyaluron Liquid that provides the desired hydration without making the solution too thick. The recommended usage rate for Double Hyaluron Liquid for normal or generally dehydrated skin is 3-5%. While this is a higher percentage of the liquid product than your 0.2% powder mix, the liquid format and specific blend are designed for easier formulation and potentially lower viscosity at effective hydration levels compared to powder forms that significantly increase viscosity. You may need to experiment within the recommended range (3-5%) to find the concentration that works best with your spray bottle.
