Question
I have been using a cream containing Activated Resorcinol™ (4-butyl Resorcinol) at a concentration of 1g per 50g of cream (which I now realize is higher than the recommended 0.5g per 50g) for over a year, applying it daily and nightly, and have not experienced any irritation, while seeing good whitening results.
- Should I reduce the concentration of
Activated Resorcinol™ (4-butyl Resorcinol)to 0.5g per 50g for long-term use, considering I did not include any irritation-reducing agents in the original formula? - Previously,
MSH Whiteneeded to be dissolved in oil. Now that it is a liquid oil itself, can I useMSH White Absorbto dissolveActivated Resorcinol™ (4-butyl Resorcinol)instead ofLipidSoft™? I am usingLight Cream Maker™to create the cream texture and want to reduce the overall oil content. - I have been using the cream from question 1 along with another cream (presumably the one containing
MSH White Absorbmentioned in question 2, or another formula with whitening agents) for over 3 months without personal irritation. If I were to make these creams for others to use, would applying these two formulas simultaneously be problematic? Is the total amount of whitening agents excessive, even though I personally saw significant whitening results?
Answer
Based on your questions and the provided reply:
- Regarding the Activated Resorcinol™ concentration: Yes, it is recommended to reduce the concentration of Activated Resorcinol™ (4-butyl Resorcinol) to 0.5g per 50g of cream (1%). As the reply states, manufacturer recommended usage levels are determined to balance efficacy and potential side effects. While you personally did not experience irritation at a higher concentration, using ingredients within the recommended range is generally safer for long-term use and reduces the risk of adverse reactions, especially when formulating for others.
- Regarding dissolving Activated Resorcinol™: Yes, as confirmed in the reply, you can likely use MSH White Absorb™ (at 6% in your formula) to dissolve Activated Resorcinol™ (at 1%). Since MSH White Absorb is already oil-based, this could potentially replace the need for an additional oil like LipidSoft™ and help reduce the overall oiliness of the formula, particularly when using Light Cream Maker™ as the emulsifier.
- Regarding using both creams together and the total whitening agents: You mentioned that you have personally used both creams for over 3 months without issues and have seen significant whitening results. While this is your personal experience, it's important to note that skin sensitivity varies greatly among individuals. Using ingredients at the manufacturer's recommended levels is generally safe for individual ingredients. However, combining multiple potent active ingredients, especially several different whitening agents from two separate formulas, significantly increases the complexity and the potential for interactions or irritation for other users. Therefore, while you tolerated this combination, it cannot be guaranteed that others will. The total concentration of multiple whitening agents across both creams is high. When formulating for others, it is generally advisable to start with simpler formulas, lower concentrations, or fewer active ingredients to minimize the risk of adverse reactions. Patch testing is also highly recommended.
