Question

Is 0.5% Xanthan Gum sufficient to emulsify 3% oil in a formulation for long-term stability?

Answer

Xanthan Gum for Emulsifying Oil

Xanthan Gum is primarily used as a thickener and stabilizer in formulations, not as a primary emulsifier. While it can help improve the stability of an emulsion by increasing the viscosity of the water phase and preventing the oil and water from separating quickly, 0.5% concentration is generally not sufficient to create a stable, long-term emulsion for 3% oil.

For a truly stable emulsion that lasts, you would typically need to include a dedicated emulsifying agent. Xanthan Gum can then be used in addition to the emulsifier to further enhance stability and modify the texture.

As the previous reply mentioned, using 0.5% Xanthan Gum might temporarily hold the oil and water together for a short period (like less than a month) due to the increased viscosity, but for products intended for longer shelf life or sale, it will likely lead to separation over time.
