Question

I plan to use NaturalProfile™ Grape Seed Oil (Cold-Pressed) at 10% in a facial gua sha oil formulation. How prone is this oil to rancidity, and what measures should be taken to ensure the stability and shelf life of the formula?

Answer

The NaturalProfile™ Grape Seed Oil (Cold-Pressed) (ID 120) is moderately prone to rancidity compared to more stable oils. This is because it is very high in Linoleic Acid (58-78%), a polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) that is susceptible to oxidation when exposed to air, light, and heat.

Since you are using it in a facial gua sha oil formula, which is an anhydrous (water-free) product, the primary concern is oil rancidity.

To prevent the oil from going rancid, it is highly recommended to add an oil-soluble antioxidant to your formula:

  • Recommended Antioxidant: Use Vitamin E (dl-alpha tocopherol) (ID 135) or a similar oil-soluble antioxidant.
  • Suggested Usage Rate: Add the antioxidant at a rate of 0.1% to 1.0% of the total formula. This will significantly extend the shelf life and stability of your gua sha oil.

Additional Stability Tips:

  1. Store the finished product in an airtight, dark-colored bottle (such as amber or opaque) to protect it from light.
  2. Keep the product in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat.
