Used as a fluorescent probe in biological imaging due to its strong emission in the visible range and sensitivity to environmental polarity. Exhibits high quantum yield in non-aqueous media, making it suitable for tracking lipid membranes and intracellular structures in live cells. Also applied in photodynamic therapy research as a photosensitizer candidate, where it generates reactive oxygen species under visible light irradiation. Its zwitterionic nature at physiological pH allows for good cell membrane permeability and low cytotoxicity. Additionally employed in the development of chemosensors for metal ion detection, particularly for Zn²⁺ and Cu²⁺ in aqueous buffers.
